Removing Cars from CP Might Not Solve Too Much
A few years ago, I was one of those spandex riders doing 15-17 minute loops in the Park, generally between 10am and 12 noon. I no longer ride in the Park -- not because of the ticketing blitz, but because there are way too many people at that hour who do unpredictable things and make it dangerous for cyclists. I actually find it much safer during cars hours primarily because during those times, there is a natural flow that seems to work well. Pedestrians cross at crosswalks when they get the proper signal, runners are in the runners lanes, and cyclists in the bike lanes. It all works.
HOV Lanes
HOV lanes in the park llimit cars to those with two or more passengers. These type of lanes are supposed to encourage carpooling. Since when is a taxi driver and one passenger considered a car pool? Or a limo with one passenger, for that matter? Taxis and Limos with only one passenger should not be allowed in HOV lanes. Anyone disagree with this?

Perspective
As I ride these days, my sense of greatfulness for being able to experience one of life's great pleasures has reached a whole new level as the tragedy and misery of the Japanese people are on my mind.
Cops Ticketing Cyclists for Red Lights Far Beyond Central Park
Cops Ticketing Cyclists for Red Lights Far Beyond Central Park
Gothamist, March 10, 2011
There's been an outcry over the NYPD cracking down on cyclists who blow through red lights in Central Park, and biking advocates hope to persuade the NYPD to adjust enforcement in the park at a meeting Monday night. But if you ride a bike outside of Central Park, don't think for a minute you're off the hook. Artist and graphic designer Tyler Lafreniere found this out the hard way last night on Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn. He writes:
Discover the Bronx River Ride (March 19 @ 2pm)
Help kick off our 2011 season by joining Dykes on Bike Cycles (DOBC) and Bike The Bronx (BTB) for a gentle 8-mile ride along the beautiful Bronx River! Stick with us after the ride as we eat and imbibe at the Bruckner Bar & Grill located in the neighborhood of Mott Haven.
TIME: 2 PM

The Bronx River - Shoelace Park
219th Street & Bronx Blvd.
Bronx, NY 10466
End:

The path along the river is paved, but once we leave the park we'll be biking on-street routes.

Defending Your Central Park Ticket
Steve Bauman has kindly supplied a copy of his remarks from last night's Community Council meeting.
Steve has taken a good look at NYS vehicular traffic law and smartly unearthed the fact that cyclists, during hours of Park vehicle closure, may not be legally subject to traffic-control signals.
If you are contesting your summons you'll want to take a good look at Steve's remarks.
