GPS enabled turn-by-turn computers

Submitted by fhacklander on Mon, 07/30/2012 - 10:45am

Having finally taken the plunge back into group riding, I noticed that many of my fellow travelers had GPS computers with turn by turn instructions for the particular route.  Since I am challenged in the cue sheet reading department, I have two questions for the experts.  1) What are my computer options (want cheap) especially since the low cost options appear to be few and 2) should I buy the recommended option, how do I get those cool instructions to download?  A corollary to this last is, are there any of the rides in the ride library to be found in one of these downloadable formats?

Bear Mountain, Metro North

Submitted by vinlaw on Mon, 07/30/2012 - 9:19am

I am planning a slow, gentlemanly assault on Bear Mountain on Saturday with return journey by train from Garrison which I may post on Ride Listings. Do we have to make any special arrangements with Metro North. If I post it would be ten bikes maximum.

Thanks

Vincent.

This was sent to me by Steve Vaccaro, the lawyer whose great work representing cyclists (and, sadly, the families of killed cyclists) you should know. So Steve shows up for one of my rides a few weeks ago looking like a complete doofus. Khaki shorts. T-shirt. Gummy "boater" shoes. Riding a bike used in the Olympics...by weightlifters in place of their iron dumbbells.

South County Trailway Ardsley Access : Re-Opened

Submitted by JFinder on Sun, 07/29/2012 - 7:26pm

The Elm St. entry to the South County Trailway in Ardsley was obliterated by construction last summer.

After completion of the new Westchester-Sports-something building, a new access to the SC Trailway off Elm Street has been created, just past the new building.

Greenwood Lake 8/5

Submitted by DHudes on Sun, 07/29/2012 - 4:37pm

I've scheduled a ride to Greenwood Lake for 8/5. The route goes through Harriman Park. The ride is front-loaded with climbing: the first 23 miles have 3200 feet of climbing in roughly 3 segments.  This is a no-drop ride -- and that also means no dropping me on my own ride. If you're not yet a strong climber, this ride will help if you have the endurance and perseverance. If you are a strong climber, you'll have the opportunity to push yourself then wait for the rest of the group at the top.

Definitely On! Sunday's Pedal & Paddle

Submitted by nymultisport on Sat, 07/28/2012 - 7:35pm

Tomorrow's Pedal & Paddle ride is on! We're still meeting at GCT as planned, and taking MN to Noroton Heights Station (the stop before Darien.) The outfitter and I will confer about the weather at 6:30AM tomorrow morning. Should conditions change, I'll post on the Message Board before 7:00 AM.

We may truncate the bicycling route as conditions dictate, but unless there's lightning and thunder and/or heavy rain (we don't go on the water in these conditions,) treat this ride as though you're expecting showers and dress accordingly. So, bring your bike rainwear, Marilyn and I always use bike rain gear for kayaking in inclement weather.

Most noteworthy are the conditions of incarceration.

Westchester Series 2 ride is ON, but...

Submitted by old-n-slow on Sat, 07/28/2012 - 6:34am

Westchester Series 2 ride is ON, but weather forecast indicates a chance of getting wet.  So, the ride might be cut short as there are plenty of bail-out locations along route.   Bring your metro-north train pass.
