Road Bike vs. Hybrid for getting in shape

Submitted by johnvic on Thu, 08/09/2012 - 11:41am

I had not been riding much in the last few years. Recently I started a little riding on my hybrid, doing 25 to 30 mile city rides. I'm planning on doing the ENY ride, but nbot the 100 mile option, probably 50 or 65 miles. My hybrid is heavier than my road bike. Is there an advantage to riding the hybrid to get in shape for the ride or is getting used to the road bike again as important as riding a heavier bike?

Special interests over the greater good? - Old Put improvement in VC Park

Sure an attractive looking surface for the Old Putnam Trail in Van Cortlandt Park seems like a good idea, at first. But it is the cork in the drinking end of the bottle of an asphalt surface multi-use trail that extends to Brewster, NY. The stone dust surface will surely degrade with increased use. Where will funds be found to keep the surface useable to the meekest cyclist? Will a pothole ridden surface still be conducive to cycling commuters? Besides, their proposed surface would preclude usage by skaters and skateboarders. Who serves the common good better in this public project? Should you have strong feelings one way or the other, post, as I have done to: http://www.facebook.com/saveputnamtrailnow

Today's NY Daily News Article

Club Members,

I am a new club member and am aware of the history of issues between law enforcement and cyclists in Central Park. It's not new news to anyone regarding frequent crack downs in the Parks on speeding cyclists, however, the dust storm is going to kick up again.

Today's NY Daily News has a front page article on speeding cyclists in the Park. Here is a link to that story and with a video:

Thanks for the congrats

Well as one might expect congratulations and honours are pouring into my inbox following the team GB cycling results this week at the Olympics. Much as I would like to be remembered for this great moment in our cycling history I feel it encumbent upon my person to acknowledge the fact that the cyclists had some small part to play in this. In all modesty I do feel bound to point out that we in the UK are not all super human. And to this end I will be aptly demonstrating my non super human abilities on the bicycle this weekend.  Please try not to blow me over as you pass by.

All joking aside.. WOW.. a proud moment..

No, not mine but Raquel's, one of the vocalists for The Dotted Eyes, an acoustic indie-pop band from Boston.

Raquel Barrientos is a fellow cyclist and in June she was "right hooked" by a truck in Cambridge, MA.  Fortunately she survived the accident but she did spend some time in the hospital recovering from the injuries she received.  The band is now back on the road and they will be playing a couple gigs in town tonight and tomorrow.

route to riverdale?

fellow bicycle 'enthusiasts' - I'm visiting a friend tomorrow in Riverdale and thinking of riding there. Below is google's bike route suggestion. Does this make sense to you? I've never gone North past the GW on the west side.  Does this route seem legit?

Would appreciate any AM intelligence on this --

Wheel Tuning Opinions

Heres the deal. I have a little under 2K on my new Campy Neutron wheels.. Love them like butter.. I want them to stay that way. should I have them spun and tension checked.. and if so wo should I have do it .. I am a mechanically sound individual .. build my own bikes etc and have built wheels in the past but I feel that wheel building is a skill that needs to be practiced regularly to be any use..

Are you an ethical cyclist?     Do you run red lights?     Do you ignore and refuse to stop for pedestrians, who are waiting to cross the road, in cross-walks?
