Cylist Accident on GWB This Afternoon

Submitted by RSchmon on Sun, 11/23/2014 - 11:32pm

Just west of the pylon closest to the NJ side of the GWB this afternoon around 1pm, a female cyclist was being loaded onto an ambulance, with 2 police cars re-directing traffic.  According to a police officer I asked a bit further on, she was involved in a crash with another cyclist going around the pylon.  I have no idea if that information was accurate, but I am sure the officer was not happy with the speed some of the cylists were going at when the bridge was so crowded with both peds and cyclists.

Cheap effective lighting

Submitted by NWeissman on Sun, 11/23/2014 - 8:36pm

I'm often asked for a good lighting solution.

One flashlight is fine for any Club ride.  Two lights and a couple of spare batteries for extended night riding.

X2000 Flood-to-Throw Zooming Glass Optics LED 200lm Flashlight w/ Cree P4-WC (1*18650) - $7.28

Universal Bicycle Mount - $1.81

Ultra Fire All-in-One Batteries Charger w/ 2*18650 Li-ion Batteries - $12.49

Cold days like today got me dreaming of cycling in sunny Spain - Vamanos!

I'd love to get a contingent of NYCCers to go to Girona in late Feb, perhaps early March. Girona is a gorgeous part of Catalonia, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, about 90 minutes form Barcelona. It's like what the Grapefruit League in Florida is for baseball, only here it's the cyclists. Lots of pros have their "Spring Training" in Girona. And it's usually less rainy and warmer that it is in Mallorca. I've contacted a company run by a Brit gal who has some great deals. A week, dbl occ, B&B for 390 Euro, 595 Euro for a single, or 995 for the lux package. That's pretty good. And we might have a Hemingway moment and witness a Catalan revolution!

Spectacular ENY!

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Fri, 11/21/2014 - 4:17pm

I went to the Escape New York volunteer party the other night – what a blast!   Must have been 1 million people there, maybe more.   Every person there a volunteer in the making of ENY.  Such wonderful energy, happiness, smiles, how proud everyone was to play a role in ENY.

Claire announced the event generated $28,000.  Wow!  She went on to say we will have the ability to help several charities and worthy causes we have helped so much in the past.  Inner city children,  job training, health, safe cycling, people in need, people whose day is a bit better because of how much we care, because of how hard we worked.

City Council Hearing Report

Submitted by CWaaser on Thu, 11/20/2014 - 7:35pm

The City Council Committee on Transportation held a hearing today on all things bicycle.  I spoke about Intro 544, the bill introduced by Council Member Mark Treyger with the intention of banning texting while cycling, and pointed out that the current language of the bill would cause confusion as to whether GPS units and cycle computers would become illegal. Both Committee Chair Rodriguez and Council Member Treyger are eager to find better wording that will simplify the bill to ban actual texting while riding and not ban GPS or other cycle computer units.  I will follow up with the Council Member’s staff.
