Indoor Training.. not so bad..

Submitted by Sir Roger on Thu, 01/15/2015 - 5:25pm

Indoor training can be very boring.. this year I was going to grit my teeth and ride outside more... I sold my rollers at the end of last winter..

Then I ran into one of the cycleops reps at Strictly Bs and over a cup of coffee he showed me VirtualTraining on a lap top and it looked so cool I had to give it a try.

My setup.  Kurt Kinetic Road Machine  (Fluid Trainer 150 sh on cl)  Ipad sitting on a music stand with a wahoo fitness key and adapter plugged in. The Ipad can then read my cadence speed and HR sensors.

Board FAQ. How do I get badges?

Submitted by isaacb on Tue, 01/13/2015 - 11:44pm

Hi: I'm back in the NYCC and on the board after a hiatus. It's good to see old faces and new. Is there a FAQ for the message board? For instance, I notice that some folks have "badges", like that they've done SIG. Whom do I speak with to get mine up? Thanks.

An honor conferred....

... and I was there to witness it.

At tonight's club meeting, Richard Rosenthal was "given" Lifetime Membership by the New York Cycle Club. I place "given" in quotation marks because there can be no doubt on anyone's part that the honor was earned. Earned through years of service, and more than a certain amount of devotion to the furtherance of the core goals of the NYCC. Any attempt on my part to enumerate or speak to any of these accomplishments would be reductive as well as foolish.

Congratulations Richard... I am honored to call you friend.

Minus 6° riding?

Submitted by RSchoenbohm on Tue, 01/13/2015 - 4:56pm

The mtg start time of 7PM in Carle Place runs afoul of no-bike rush hour timing of LIRR.

So I'm cycling there, as I did last year.  I filed a ride and will have map/cue ready soon, starting from the East side of the 59th St bridge. It's about 2 hrs. max ride, so prompt departure 4PM.  Return via LIRR from Mineola RR station, a short (night!) bike ride to the east of Cannondale store.  Serious lighting needed on your bike.

Fun and informative meeting, rando stuff and pix and film, amidst bike bling, with good refreshments (nicely done yummies and bevs last year, as I recall).

Alternatively, it may be possible to arrange a mini-van to pick up pedestrians arriving at the Mineola LIRR station at about 6PM.

The police slowdown is over. At the market on 9W yesterday morning— a group of 3 cyclists were talking about how one of them got a Red Light ticket on northbound CPW and 103rd Sunday morning around 8am on their way out. They "checked" his bike and give him an extra ticket for no bell no reflectors (lawful?).

Glad to see the NYPD are not picking the low hanging fruits this time around. Braving the cold to make a traffic stop. I feel safer they're back on the job.

Difficult bike tire removal/installation

Hello fellow riders!

Some tire and rim combinations are hard to work with.

I made a video with some tips that maybe can help.

Conditions on Henry Hudson Drive & 9W?

Submitted by JHerzfeld on Sat, 01/10/2015 - 3:43pm

A notice on the Palisades Interstate Park site says:

"Due to weather, no construction through Sun., Jan. 11. Road open to pedestrians & cyclists during this time, but use caution."

Anyone know what Henry Hudson Drive ("River Rd") is like? Plowed and salted or snow-covered? How's 9w?
