shipping a bike

Submitted by lodgemich on Tue, 02/03/2015 - 11:40pm

I'm doing the Key Largo MS ride in March and would like to ship my bike to Miami.

What's the most reliable and most cost-efficient way to do it? Do you recommend using FeDex or UPS boxes or should I use a bicycle case? Also, will a local bike shop affilated with the ride take the shipment? Any experience with that?

Snowshoeing on Saturday

Submitted by nymultisport on Tue, 02/03/2015 - 6:19pm

Marilyn and Ken are snowshoeing this Saturday, 2/7/15, somewhere in either Harriman or Bear Mountain State Parks--location will be determined by weather conditions. Departing UWS promptly at 8:30 am, returning to NYC about 3:30-4:00 pm, after the usual coffee and sweets stop at DePierros in Montvale.

We car pool, so drivers are especially welcome. Passengers contribute $20/ea to their outbound driver. There are no public transportation options. Approximately 4-6 miles over moderately challenging terrain virtually guarantees you'll sleep pretty well Saturday evening.

You MUST bring snowshoes and traction aids like MicroSpikes or Stabilicers Maxx. Poles, while not required, are a good idea.

Contact Ken for details.

Question for Fixie Riders

.

all 3 of you out there...

I kind of understand the theory of better traction in this frozen slop on asphalt. In actuality, are you any less likely to wipeout if you have to ride through slush/snow/ frozen stuff underneath (NYC street corner)?

According to Port authority's site, the side walk was closed effective January 30th and it was close again this morning, but they never posted it being open anytime between. It appears from Strava cyclists rode through yesterday.

Bicycling Magazine (March 2015 issue) has a list of "26 Ways to Hang With Faster Friends". There are some good things included in the article, but they miss what I consider the best way, and that is to actually ride with faster friends (and make new ones at the same time).

Heart Rate Monitors

I have noticed that there seems to be an effluent of new tech HRMs coming on the market. Yes as cyclists and runners,, ie fit people, these little gadgets can be handy. But is there really a huge market beyond sporty types for HRMs.

Are we moving toward a time when people will be checking their HR over coffee with a donut along with latest tweets and texts.

More importantly what are these new HR aware people going to do with the information. Is this the device that is going to warn people off that second slice of pie. Are we going to see those Cadilac size bums reduce.. will we see a drop in Diabetes..
