Interested in attending or biking to the L. I. Randonneuring/Cannondale meeting this Thursday 1/15?
The mtg start time of 7PM in Carle Place runs afoul of no-bike rush hour timing of LIRR.
So I'm cycling there, as I did last year. I filed a ride and will have map/cue ready soon, starting from the East side of the 59th St bridge. It's about 2 hrs. max ride, so prompt departure 4PM. Return via LIRR from Mineola RR station, a short (night!) bike ride to the east of Cannondale store. Serious lighting needed on your bike.
Fun and informative meeting, rando stuff and pix and film, amidst bike bling, with good refreshments (nicely done yummies and bevs last year, as I recall).
Alternatively, it may be possible to arrange a mini-van to pick up pedestrians arriving at the Mineola LIRR station at about 6PM.

The police slowdown is over. At the market on 9W yesterday morning— a group of 3 cyclists were talking about how one of them got a Red Light ticket on northbound CPW and 103rd Sunday morning around 8am on their way out. They "checked" his bike and give him an extra ticket for no bell no reflectors (lawful?).
Glad to see the NYPD are not picking the low hanging fruits this time around. Braving the cold to make a traffic stop. I feel safer they're back on the job.
Difficult bike tire removal/installation
Hello fellow riders!
Some tire and rim combinations are hard to work with.
I made a video with some tips that maybe can help.

Conditions on Henry Hudson Drive & 9W?
A notice on the Palisades Interstate Park site says:
"Due to weather, no construction through Sun., Jan. 11. Road open to pedestrians & cyclists during this time, but use caution."
Anyone know what Henry Hudson Drive ("River Rd") is like? Plowed and salted or snow-covered? How's 9w?
At least Max's killer who "hit and ran" wasn't drunk.
(Before you read the following story, here's an update on Priya Nanda, who killed Max Vickers. She spent literally 5 mins. behind bars and never did enter medical school as she told the court she was going to do. (She did have her license suspended for three years.))
Really the only thing noteworthy about the following story--just another hit-and-run driver/killer of a cyclist (this one in Baltimore)-- is that it was on the front page of the New York Times online last evening and remains there again this morning. It's on page A11 in print--a far longer and more prominent story than is run about local Deaths by Driver, the sensational reason being the driver was a drunk bishop. Non-ecclesiastical drunks and sober killer-drivers just aren't as newsworthy.
DOT Proposes Riverside Drive Traffic Calming, But Not Bike Lanes - Streetsblog
The plan as currently designed results in a net gain of six parking spaces, but some community board members wanted more. “We need to be finding extra spaces to take care of people who are not well enough off to have a garage and the luxury of a garage,” said CB 9 member Ted Kovaleff, who asked that DOT add angled parking to 116th and 120th Streets to squeeze in more cars...

Scarsdale/Balducci's ride postponed from Saturday to Sunday (1/11/15)
The single-digit wind chill forecast for Saturday scared us off....
Here's hoping that Sunday is balmy.
