B14 and B16 SIG Preview Rides canceled

Submitted by LWintner on Fri, 02/06/2015 - 2:57pm

Hi all.

We’re so sorry but we are canceling the ride this weekend.  We are concerned about the safety of the roads due to possible ice, slush, and snow.

Unfortunately, we are not able to do it later this month due to scheduling issues.

But, if you have questions about the B SIG, please try to come to the NYCC meeting this Tuesday, Feb. 10, which will be all about the SIG’s.  There will be leaders from all the different SIG’s who will make presentations and can answer your questions.

Here’s hoping you join a SIG this Spring.  They are all wonderful.  Great fun, great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, and good exercise to boot!!!

R-STS is a ten (10) ride series for NYCC B-Riders that will run Saturdays March 7 through May 9.

Intended for SIG graduates and comparably experienced cyclists, the R-STS seeks to expand riders' horizons beyond the Piermont-Nyack corridor.  The program will feature two events hosted by Long Island Randonneurs: the Jones Beach 100K on 3/28 and the Ronkonkoma 200K on 5/9.

Central Park X-Country Skiing

Anyone try x-country skiing in Central Park this year?  Any idea how the bridal path is with snow?

Are we seeing a trend toward heavier road bikes?

Submitted by mgeller1 on Wed, 02/04/2015 - 10:11am

Was thinking about this.
We're getting hit with new technology, that is gaining acceptance while adding weight to bikes in star contrast to the trend these last few decades of lighter and lighter bikes.  Adding a power meter, EPS, bike computer, disc brakes, etc can easily add 500 grams or more to a bikes weight.  While I don't think a pound on a bike makes a huge deal. For years advances in bike frames to some riders meant shaving 50 grams of weight.

shipping a bike

I'm doing the Key Largo MS ride in March and would like to ship my bike to Miami.

What's the most reliable and most cost-efficient way to do it? Do you recommend using FeDex or UPS boxes or should I use a bicycle case? Also, will a local bike shop affilated with the ride take the shipment? Any experience with that?

Snowshoeing on Saturday

Submitted by nymultisport on Tue, 02/03/2015 - 7:19pm

Marilyn and Ken are snowshoeing this Saturday, 2/7/15, somewhere in either Harriman or Bear Mountain State Parks--location will be determined by weather conditions. Departing UWS promptly at 8:30 am, returning to NYC about 3:30-4:00 pm, after the usual coffee and sweets stop at DePierros in Montvale.

We car pool, so drivers are especially welcome. Passengers contribute $20/ea to their outbound driver. There are no public transportation options. Approximately 4-6 miles over moderately challenging terrain virtually guarantees you'll sleep pretty well Saturday evening.

You MUST bring snowshoes and traction aids like MicroSpikes or Stabilicers Maxx. Poles, while not required, are a good idea.

Contact Ken for details.
