Why Isn’t It a Crime To Kill a Cyclist with a Car? - Next City

Submitted by NWeissman on Sat, 01/03/2015 - 2:55pm

It was a clear and bright spring morning in central Mississippi. Jan Morgan and her cycling buddy Kim Richardson were riding along the edge of a two-lane highway, training for an upcoming triathlon in Florida. Both wore helmets. It was Sunday and traffic was slow on a rare flat stretch of State Highway 50. That’s when Richardson heard the rumble of an approaching car.

Reminder: What to Do in Case of Car/Bike Crash

Submitted by CWood on Fri, 01/02/2015 - 6:19pm

Dear NYCC friends,

The cycling season has begun anew, so it's time for my biannual reminder to visit my site, NYC Car Crash Resources, at http://NycCarAccident.net.

This not-for-profit site details your right to medical care under the NYS No-Fault law if ever struck by a car -- as a cyclist or pedestrian. And it explains the steps needed to obtain it.

These steps include, importantly:

1) Noting the license plate number. (Write it down or ask a passerby to. I recite the numbers out loud over and over until I can write them down.)

Still Room for More for the Southern California Cycling Camp in February

Submitted by FLeffel on Thu, 01/01/2015 - 8:19pm

We've still got room for more at the cyling camp that's been set up for NYCCer's in Temecula, CA the last week in February. We have a nice group going so far, but the more the merrier. Again, the dates are Feb 23 - 27.

The riding's great and varied enough to accommodate folks of a wide range of abilities and the instruction and clinics are top notch. And the wine's pretty fantastic, too. It's a great way to shake off the winter cobwebs and get in shape for the Spring riding season. (And a great way to prep for the SIG!)

As there has been a drop-off in those wanting to build a bike wheel from scratch, added this year is a component for those who only want to learn how to true their wheels.

Building? Bring a hub, rim (ideally with the same number of holes as the hub), and spokes (one for each hole, preferably the right length--consult me if in doubt); go home 3-ish hours later with a perfectly built wheel you'll have built yourself.

Truing? Bring your wheel, the more deformed the better. Go home 45 mins. later with a perfectly trued wheel you'll have trued.

When: A Saturday or Sunday in January or February, to be decided by the class.

Where: Our Lady of Peace church on East 62nd Street.

Cost: $0.

Registration: Closes Jan. 10
