Recommended material (aluminum / carbon / steel) for NYC riding?

Submitted by roadrunner58 on Wed, 05/12/2021 - 9:42am

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new bike in advance of this summer's B SIG, as my current road bike does not meet SIG standards.

Which material do you recommend: aluminum, steel, or carbon? Should I be looking for an all-aluminum or all-steel bike? I am concerned about the durability of carbon while riding in and around NYC.

Also, I see some bikes use aluminum frames but carbon forks. Does having any carbon part on a bike automatically make it more fragile? Or are there specific parts where carbon is / is not recommended? For instance, I have heard that carbon tires would have poor durability for city riding? Also, if you have a steel or aluminum frame, does a carbon fork negate some of that durability?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Berkshires lodging option in Great Barrington

Submitted by PHofherr on Tue, 05/11/2021 - 9:43am

If you haven’t made your reservation for the Memorial Day Weekend in the Berkshires, we’ve arranged a rate of $139 + tax per night for a three-night stay at the Day’s Inn in Great Barrington. There are still a few rooms available until they release them to the general public at a higher rate on May 15. You also have the option of sharing a room at half the cost. If you've already made a reservation there at a higher rate, you can call them and ask for the reduced rate.

Most C Rides start there and it’s only 2 short blocks into the center of Great Barrington. Just call them before 3 PM at 413 528 3150 and ask for Brian. Tell him you’re with the New York Cycle Club and ask for the reduced rate.

Replace 13-year-old tubes even if they don't leak?

Submitted by JFeinberg on Mon, 05/10/2021 - 9:15am

I gave my Dad a brand-new Trek 7000 hybrid 13 years ago that I bought at "The Bicycle Doctor" in Middletown NY.  He rode it a few times back in 2008, and it's sat in his dry garage and collected dust ever since.  I'm going to clean it up and pass it on to a friend.  Should I replace the tubes, even though they look OK and still hold air?  The bike has slightly knobby 700x35 tires, with 700x35/43 tubes.  Whoever gets the bike is not going to know how to change a tube.

Transportation of luggage and / or bikes to the Berkshires

I have a friend with a cargo van who can tranport riders' bikes and luggage to and from the Berskshires. He has helped out on the Ride to Montauk and other rides transporting items in trucks. The fee is $30 each way for bags and $50 per bike. This service is independent of NYCC and will require a minimum level of interest for it to happen. The cut off date for commitments is May 25. Drop offs will be in Manhattan and Brooklyn on May 27 and the items would be brought up to the Berkshires on May 28. The items would be picked up and brought back to the city on May 31. Feel free to email me at [email protected] with any questions.
