Pedal/Shoe Question: Shimano SPD or Look System?
Currently, I have entry level Specialized shoe with SPD cleats and entry level pedal. A friend of mine had similar set up and switched to an entry level Look pedal ($120 retail) and new shoe, also entry level. He said there was a big difference and benefit to making the switch in terms of efficiency. Will I get the same benefit if I just upgrade my pedal to one that accepts SPD cleat but has a wider surface? Or should I just do what my friend did and spend the $220 or so to switch to the different system, but at entry level? Ok, now discuss....and thanks for all the input. BTW, I ride 2-4 times a week, generally in the park for fitness and on Sundays I do the Piermont and back ride.
If you liked Randy Cohen's talk to the club--and you did--you'll love hearing him tomorrow night, Wednesday.
How much would you pay to laugh? $150 (and up) to see "The Book of Mormon"? Or $15 to see and hear NYCCer Randy Cohen, tomorrow (Wed.) night only? (You can see "The Book of Mormon" anytime. Tomorrow night is the only time you can see Randy with David Rakoff.)
Any C-STS Rides?
I'm a new member to NYCC. I checked the calendar and did not see any C-rides. Is there another ride recommended for beginners in Manhattan? Thanks.

Here's why the police don't care about dead cyclists
http://bicycling.com/blogs/roadrights/2012/03/05/the-dutch-law/
In a nutshell, in the US, the driver has the presumption of innocence and the cyclist needs to prove negligence, which is nearly impossible in the absence of impairment or egregious behavior. In Europe, they've assumed that any collision is the fault of the driver and its his/her responsibility to prove otherwise. This is because drivers are inherently protected by the car, while cyclists are obviously extremely vulnerable (and presumably exercise due caution in acknowledgment of this fact). In addition, the driver is also protected by insurance, which further reduces his/her level of care.
NYCC Comments on Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement
President Ellen Jaffe and Board Member Carol Waaser recently attended a presentation in Tarrytown of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing Project (i.e., the new Tappan Zee Bridge). Project coordinators are required to do an Environmental Impact Statement and seek public comment. After the presentation and after careful study of the technical drawings on which the DEIS was based, we submitted the following written comments, which were also endorsed by CRCA. [To look at the drawings, click here and scroll down to Appendices. Click on Appendix A-2, then go to page 8 for the Rockland access path and page 25 for the Tarrytown access path. You

Hi. If the pavement is wet when I look out my window at 5:15am (or, if it's raining or about to rain), I won't be riding. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Regards, Linda
