Website Update: July 2012

Submitted by dortsman on Mon, 07/09/2012 - 4:19pm

Hello...

It's been a while since I've written one of these...  The last few months has seen mostly backend and ENY related work.

Early this morning, we released a check at ride sign-up.  Systematically, members will only be allowed to join one ride per four hours.  There is an exception for CP & PP loops. For example, one could ride loops in the morning and then to Nyack with NYCC.

We are still tweaking the messaging. If you see any issues, please drop me an email: [email protected].

Next up: ride waitlists.

Update on NJT low platform bike boarding - BAD

Submitted by NWeissman on Sun, 07/08/2012 - 11:20pm

Somebody really screwed the pooch on the new low-platform bike boarding policy.

We had eight cyclists stranded in Port Jervis after being denied boarding on the 5:27PM out of Port Jervis.  Conductors' instructions on low platform procedure was explicitly at odds with what's posted on their website.  A couple hours on the phone with NJT-MNR Customer Service got us onto the 8:49PM.

Similar reports from two other cyclists in Otisville and Hoboken.

If you are making plans to bike in NJT, I'd recommend to continue to avoid low platform stations until further notice.

Did this ride happen already? If so I am curious how the roads are up there considering the hurricane hit that area hard last fall.

Tuesday "C" Ride - Bronx>Greenwich>Armonk>Valhalla>Bronx Triangle

Submitted by nymultisport on Sun, 07/08/2012 - 5:39pm

C-Touring-pace, about 45-50 mile - Bronx>Greenwich>Armonk>Valhalla>Bronx triangle on Tuesday. Meet 9:00AM downstairs at the 241st St/Wakefield Station; last stop on the #2 line. We plan to depart promptly at 9:15 AM, so allow yourself 50-60 minutes from midtown.

Expect about 90% tree shade on our outbound route as we hop-'n-skip along the Hutch, cut through SUNY Purchase to King St., then take beautiful Bedford Rd on our way to an indoor/outdoor lunch at Mariani Gardens in Armonk. Rt 22 and the Bronx River bike path account for most of our return route.

Please let us know if you plan to join.

Cyclist Injured Avoiding J Walker Facts and Thoughts

Submitted by MGewirtz on Sun, 07/08/2012 - 8:30am
Earlier this week I crashed while trying to avoid a J walking pedestrian. The pedestrian was not hit, but I suffered a fractured hip and pelvis. I am advised that I will be unable to bear weight on my left leg for eight weeks and may have residuals after that. I am not looking for sympathy, but would like to share my experience and thoughts in the hope that it will raise awareness and perhaps start a dialogue leading to some meaningful changes in traffic law enforcement. In the interest of brevity I will omit some of the gory details regarding injury, pain, and the frustrations of dealing with the medical community.

I was riding west across town towards the West Side Greenway.

Sunday 4 Hills Ride - START TIME DELAYED

Submitted by JFinder on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 1:23pm

In view of the forecast of rain overnight and into the early morning, we’re going to delay the start time of the 4 Hills ride by an hour and a half. The ride will now start at 10:30AM, still on the New York side of the George Washington Bridge bike path.

If the weather forecast changes and it looks like rain will continue later into the day, OR IF THE RAIN WILL END EARLIER, we’ll email the participants directly, and also be sure to check the NYCC Message Board for any updates.

See you tomorrow morning.
