Report from today's Long Beach ride

Submitted by NWeissman on Sun, 11/04/2012 - 10:17pm

Across 59 Street Bridge.  Through Queens and out to Long Beach.  Food stops in Valley Stream and Hewlett.  Back through Queens with some of opting out of the last ten miles via the "F" near Jamaica.

Route was challenging for a number of reasons -- trying to avoid power lines or fallen trees, staying off main roads and not wanting to appear like a bunch of neopreening ninnies meandering through a war zone.    And it was a navigational headache, but I think we threaded the needle with some good runs and water views to boot.

Does anyone know why the arrow showing proper direction of rotation has been removed? (I use only red tires...not sure that matters.)

Think twice before riding in central NJ

After the abortive ride through Westchester yesterday, we tried the Great Swamp ride today (one of Mitch's cue sheets).  We fared a bit better than yesterday, but lots of trees and powerlines down, we got scolded by some official in the great swamp, and did need to divert through Morristown, losing 9 miles of the route.  Still alot of power outages there.  A nice day to ride, however.

...and there are quite a few on the Hudson Greenway as well. The Park is essentially impassible to cyclists, but the Greenway worked fine earlier today.

CYCLING BANNED IN PIERMONT & GRAND VIEW

Submitted by JJacobson on Sun, 11/04/2012 - 12:59pm

There has been extensive storm damage and this ban may facilitate the cleanup and restoration of utilities and services and pumping out of cellars, etc.

I am hopeful that this ban may last just a few days

River Road status report

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sun, 11/04/2012 - 9:25am

Yesterday, Saturday, Gerald and I took River Road south from just below the police station. As we emerged onto the road Andy Finkelstein on his road bike appeared, cycling up Alpine Hill. His assessment that River Road was not suitable for a road bike, but fine for a mtn bike proved to be correct . For the most part, a snow plow might prove the best means of clearing the road.

A few caveats:

Gates are closed in places, preventing motor traffic, as expected in the off season.

Small limbs are fine on a mtn bike but there are stones/rocks of varying sizes strewn about. Otherwise, rolling over arboreal litter is mildly pleasant.

2 sets of fallen trees in the southern third require bike hauling. All other downed trees can be circumvented.

Think twice before riding in Westchester

We rode through White Plains up 22 to Whipporwill yestserday-  two opportunities to cyclocross through the woods to avoid blocked roads due to downed trees and powerlines.  After Mt. Kiscoe, the trees got the better of us, and we had to abort, turn around, and take the train back from Ossining.  I'd avoid anything other than the main roads for a while.
