South Path Open Thurs. & Fri.

Submitted by CWaaser on Tue, 11/20/2012 - 3:20pm

The south path on the bridge was open today (Tuesday), even though the Port Authority website says the north path is open all this week.  I've sent an email to my contact at the PA to ask if the south path will be open Thursday & Friday.  Will post if I get a reply.

Riding on LI

Submitted by eshapiro on Tue, 11/20/2012 - 7:04am

I was thinking about riding to Montauk this weekend--does anyone know how the road conditions are out there? I'm not sure if the area is still recovering.

Thanks,

Ely

The Users…

Yes, you know who they are. It's you! You're the person constantly bemoaning the lack of rides. You’re the one who immediately signs up when a ride is posted--preserving your choices--then neglects to show up, or for that matter, to notify the leader of your absence in a timely manner. And it's you, constantly criticizing those board members, SIG leaders, web site managers, ride leaders… that terrific 3-5% of the club that busts their butts for you, year after year after year.

Helmet suggestions?

Submitted by MBruckner on Mon, 11/19/2012 - 5:42pm

Hi $40 Bell helmet has gotten well past the point when I remember having bought it, which I understand is a good test of when it's time to buy a new one. I'm a thrifty fella, but I'll be asking for this from Santa. So, any suggestions on what is a good, comfortable helmet? I could care less about weight and would still prefer a value helmet (Even though I won't be the purchaser).

Sunday SIG?

Submitted by YehuditS on Mon, 11/19/2012 - 5:22pm

I was wondering if there is interest in a Sunday SIG (e.g. A19) and possibility for someone to lead such a group(s) for those of us dying to sign up for a SIG but for various reasons Saturdays are impossible...

I don't know what the proper procedure for SIG planning is and if there is flexibility at all but I thought I put the question to the MB - people I asked during rides couldn't tell me but thought there might be enough interest out there among riders to maybe start such an initiative.

10-speed rear derailleur issues

Submitted by MFulton on Mon, 11/19/2012 - 2:07pm

I recently upgraded my drive train to 10-speed Shimano 105 5600 (next to newest 105 group). I bought the right tools (including a torque wrench), used the Park website and Shimano instructions as references, and managed to remove and install everything without a hitch. I replaced the old cables and housing as well; no problems with the routing or friction.

However, I am having problems with my rear derailleur. I set the high limit (a little to the outside of the high gear), then the low limit (in line with the low gear), then bolted on the cable, and finally set the “B” adjustment (no interference between jockey and cogs). The issues began when I tried to adjust the indexing so that I would get smooth shifting on the bottom 3-4 cogs.

Sometimes, traffic cones actually mean something!

Submitted by GeorgeArcarola on Mon, 11/19/2012 - 8:10am

On a ride this past Saturday (won't say which one, or who was on it), as we attempted a turn around a NJ traffic circle, the front two cyclists ignored some traffic cones and rode into freshly poured cement several inches deep. The crosswalks were being repaved in a delightful shade of red (it reminded me of the color of the terrain in southern Utah or nothern Arizona).

Both bikes had cement covering both tires, and both rims... while neither of the two went down, it was a mess that took some time to clean up. The paving crew was quite good natured about it, and hosed off the bikes, and the feet of the riders involved. The policeman covering the traffic circle shared a good laugh with me, but was grateful that no one fell.
