NYC Marathon Ride - PICK-UP RIDES TO START

Submitted by BAshmore on Fri, 11/02/2012 - 12:20pm

We regret the NYC Marathon (and consequently the NYC Marathon Ride and all pick-up rides to start) have been cancelled.

----------------

This thread is dedicated to organizing PICK-UP rides to start of NYC Marathon ride.

On behalf of Alfredo, myself and other leaders..........while our thoughts go out to those who are suffering at the hands of Sandy, we are not entering any debates on this thread about whether or not NYC Marathon and/or this ride should take place.

Opposing Resolution 1, to eliminate junior members

Submitted by JFinder on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 10:54pm

(copied from another thread)

We should vote against this proposition, since it has just showed up on the ballot with no prior explanation or discussion.  What will its consequences be?  Who will benefit?  Who will be hurt or disappointed?

Does this proposition target a specific problem that for some reason cannot be mentioned publicly?

Why no more junior members?  What does this mean for under-18's coming on club rides with their member-parents?  What does this mean for athletic 17-year-old NYCC members coming on the Newcomers Ride?

I will be glad to change my opinion if someone explains why this is good for all members of the club.

Waiting For Godot

The following is reproduced without any kind of permission or license or knowledge or approval from anybody whatsoever. It is extracted from Graham Healy's biography of Shay Elliott. Elliott was the first Irishman to wear the Yellow Jersey, and also won stages in the Giro and the Vuelta and wore the leader's jersey in the latter. I think he was the first non continental to win stages in all three grand tours. I just put down the book. I should remember that. For some strange reason my short term memory is shot to pieces. Anyway.

Bad weather riding - Reporter's Interview Request

Submitted by mjp2202 on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 4:09pm

Hello,

I'm a freelance reporter affiliated with the Columbia Journalism School writing about some of the bicyclists who did not let the hurricane interrupt their riding schedules. I would like to talk with anyone who has experience riding in bad weather or knows someone who decided to go biking during Sandy. Better yet, please contact me if you were out riding yourself.

Central Park Update

Submitted by CWaaser on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 3:45pm

I just received this word from the Central Park Conservancy:

"We are working very hard to clean up Central Park in the wake of the hurricane. The damage is widespread and has included the loss of 250 mature trees. Our first priority was to attend to the perimeter where there is a public sidewalk,  and then we focused on the marathon route. We are now moving into the mid-Park and north-Park areas to clean debris, prune limbs and remove downed trees. There are also numerous benches and fences to repair.
