Day rides out of the city
Hi everyone,
I'm coming over to NYC from the UK for a week from 22nd July before heading down to DC and am bringing my bike with me. I'm keen to get a couple of early morning rides around Central Park but also would really like to get out of the city on day rides. I've bought a couple of (dated) books but none of the rides really appeal. So...I was hoping for some insider local tips! I normally average around 16mph and 60 miles distance but can go further. I'll be checking the Upcoming Rides for any of you planning any that are suitable and if you know of any great rides I'd very much appreciate some info.
Thanks in anticipation!
Look forward to hearing from you,
All the best
Ben
Big shout-out to all the West Point volunteers!
Just wanted to personally thank all the volunteers who stepped up to lead a ride during the Club's 4th of July at West Point: Anita, Alan, Skip, Sandra, Barbara, Barry, Denise, Lynn, Peter, Christy, Jody, Phil, John, Antonia, Jeannie, Jonathan, Sonia, and Manuel. Thank you all for helping make this event as excellent as it was.
Special thanks to Betsy Hafkin for coordinating all those rides and wrangling all those excellent leaders.
And a huge THANK YOU! to Morene Bangel and Konstantin Janashvili, without whom none of this would have happened.
Well done, everybody!
Taconic-CT Ride Cancelled
Due to the forecast heat advisory w heat indices in excess of 100F, and the limited bailouts on this route, Dave and I regretfully are cancelling the ride.
We'll try it again later this season.
Roller noise
I have a set of several-years-old Cyclops rollers. Love them and use them regularly.
Just started making a horrible loud squeaking noise that hurts my ears. I believe it's from the front roller. I have oiled the connections and the rubber band. It did not immediately correct the problem.
The noise is more intense at the center of the roller. If I ride slightly to the left, no noise.
Anyone familiar with these things & have an idea why it's doing this?
Hurry! Enter this fun bike contest. Maybe you'll be the winner of the FABULOUS prize!!
Tomorrow is the first mountain stage in this year's TdF which is why this great contest opens today. You don't have to ride, know anything about riding, or care one bit about bike riding or racing to be the winner. All you have to be is mean-spirited, devious, cynical, and retributive.
Interesting injury stats from Citibike
This from streetsblog: http://www.streetsblog.org/2013/07/03/the-citi-bike-story-no-ones-talking-about-only-three-injuries-in-500000-rides/
The comments are good - in an informative, informed way, not a snarky way. :)
Cyclists can let NY candidates know that . . we count (and vote)
Transportation Alternatives has an easy e-page for letting cyclists/walkers/street users tell all the current primary candidates that we are supporters of such activities, and vote (of course we do!).
I urge the cyclist community to participate.
And TA sends a handy followup email (of course :>) which enables easy pass-along to others.
Happy cycling,
Susan
