Sometimes, even the best cyclist gets into an accident.  We will be discussing what you should do at the scene of the accident, and how to make sure that you have access to any available coverage.  We all know riders who have gotten tickets.  How do you avoid them?  What do you do if [or when] you get one?  Important info for all cyclists.

So exciting. . .  .Paula Froke and Tim (Timbo) McCarthy – engaged to be married!   Wow!  Paula took her career to Seattle, Timbo changed his career and is fast becoming a bicycle scientist (he’s always been a great rider), they buy a house, and now engaged.  I’m not sure, is that called “full plate”?  If anyone can do all that, Paula and Tim are the ones.

How exciting!!!  Heartfelt congratulations to one of the NYCC’s coolest couples ever!

The NYCC, once again, a the center of a better life!

Central Park Ambulance vs. 911

Submitted by LPress on Tue, 04/22/2014 - 9:56am

I witnessed a cyclist crash today in Central Park when a dog ran across the road and collided with the bike. I had saved the number for Central Park ambulance (212-585-0911) from a prior post that reccomended calling them over 911.  I called the CP ambulance, however someone else had called 911 and an ambulance from Lennox Hill arrived first. The cyclist was banged up, waited for the ambulance but ultimately decided to decline services. The owner of the dog stayed on site.

Question- I thought the EMT or Paramedic normally would put a backboard on an injured rider, this wasn't their approach. Also- it was only at my suggestion that they examined the guy's helmet.

" (M)y car is, like, pretty expensive and now I have to fix it. I’m kind of pissed off that the cyclist has hit the side of my car. I don’t agree that people texting and driving could hit a cyclist. I wasn’t on my phone when I hit the cyclist."

Website assistance - Data Manipulation & Consolidation

Submitted by nyccadmin on Mon, 04/21/2014 - 2:44pm

Hello all,

We are looking to consolidate our Sig graduate lists over the years. Currently the data format varies across the various SIG captains. We have a developed a standard format and are looking for someone with excel experience to massage the various spreadsheets into the standard format. I would estimate 4-8 hours of work over the next week, faster if you have strong excel (or other data manipulation) skills. Experience with lookup functions (e.g. VLookup) is required.

if you have the time and skills to help please email [email protected]

Many thanks in advance,

the NYCC web team

How to locate the source of a puncture in you tyre...

Submitted by YehuditS on Sun, 04/20/2014 - 1:34pm

you know,

a) locate the hole in the innertube

b) measure distance to the valve stem and transfer distance on the tyre (provided you had lined up your tyre label with your valve stem) to approximate range where the source of penetration might be located

c) check of foreign object stuck

UNLESS...

Photo: If you're going to have a puncture - at least go for the real thing, not some slow leak or pathetic tiny piece of glass!

Petition to add more bike lanes to NYC

Submitted by Isabel412 on Sat, 04/19/2014 - 3:38pm

The NYC DoT has wisely suggested redesigning traffic patterns on Morningside Avenue. While the design has many merits—it will reduce motorized vehicle speed and make the street much safer to both use and cross--it has left cyclists and cycling out of the mix. Sign the petition to add bike lanes to Morningside Ave.!

NYCC SIG - CRCA Cooperation - Riding on pathways prohibited.

Submitted by Lucia on Sat, 04/19/2014 - 2:05pm

Hi all,

Just wanted to mention something I witnessed this morning.  CRCA had a race this morning along with its annual clinics, so there were a lot of folks in the rambles shed area later than usual.  There were also B or perhaps C SIG meet-ups happening in that same area.  I realize it was a bit of a crowded situation and for the most part, groups shared the space well.
