West Point Rides Coordinator -- FOUND!

Submitted by Cyclegalnycc on Wed, 05/07/2014 - 3:41pm

We need someone to step forward to plan the rides out to West Point, rides for Saturday at West Point, and returning home on Sunday.  We have many cues and routes from prior years, so it should be a fairly straightforward task.  Kindly respond, if interested, to [email protected].

what is 1000' of climbing equivalent to in distance?

Submitted by GYang on Wed, 05/07/2014 - 2:02pm

for example - how do I compare 90 miles with 7500 feet of climbing to 120 miles with 2500 feet of climbing?

Assume round trip...ie no net climbing for either ride.

... in the Sheepshead Bay area... a young woman at work is looking to pick up a bike (must be my fine example!)... she's interested in Trek (Verve) and Giant (Rove 3) "fitness" models... she's a "newbie" and a shop that would take good care of her would go a long way.

Thanks in advance,

George

Metro-North Kills Their Last Bar Cars

A bit of levity in this otherwise sad story: "The bar cars have been something of a unicorn for many Metro-North riders."

Tire pressure

Submitted by SReynolds on Mon, 05/05/2014 - 9:44pm

The age old question. Recent questions about tires has me looking at several things like differing tube types, tire structure. But I came across this study about proper tire inflation which I thought was interesting. If aiming for a 15% deflection of a tire, which according to the study is optimal, you'd shoot for differing tire pressures for front and back depending on riding style (ie weight distribution). I usually go 110/120psi and call it good; which the 10psi protocal seems to be common knowledge. However it would be more on a linear curve, which makes sense based on the weight on the tire.
