Shifter Problem

Submitted by LGodfrey on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 6:36am

I had a major tune up for my 'errand' bike and when I picked it up the shifter was slipping between gears. This didn't happen before I brought it in. Could the shifter been messed up during the tune up?

Shifter Question

Submitted by LGodfrey on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 6:02am

I had my 'errand bike' fully tuned and when I got it back the shifter wasn't shifting correctly. It slid from higher to lower, skipping in betweens... It wasn't like that before I brought it in. Could the bike store inadvertantly mess this up in the cleaning/tuning of the bike, or is it more likely that I just need a new shifter?

Which Boston bike club is most like NYCC?

Submitted by JFinder on Tue, 06/17/2014 - 4:18pm

I'm in the early stages of organizing a group ride to take place in Cambridge, MA, in June 2015.  We'll probably start with a tour of Cambridge and then continue on to a nearby area such as Medford or Stoneham.

Please tell me if there's a club in Boston like NYCC, with a library of rides and lots of friendly people to answer questions and make suggestions.  (To supplement whatever I can find on RWGPS, etc.)

Bonus points for a Cambridge bike shop with a large supply of rental bikes.  Thanks!

Progress on the North County Trailway

The closed section after the Croton bridge crossing is now open. Well, partly open with a fence still closing half the width so that it's single file for a short stretch. This is more of a big deal for walkers/runners who must have liked the detour less than cyclists.

3 calls you should make today to lower the NYC speed limit.

What's that? You're not a member of TA? Shame on you. Here's their urgent call today. It calls on you to make three calls:

State Sen. Jeff Klein introduced a speed limit bill.  It is stalled in partisan disagreement. Three key officials have the power to bring consensus and the bill to the Senate floor.

Can the Port Authority Save the Planet? - NYT

Submitted by NWeissman on Tue, 06/17/2014 - 8:02am

The article's focus is on ecological management of the Hudson River estuary, but the principle that PA fulfill its historic function are a manager of regional transport infrastructure is easily extended to having them reorganize it on a sustainable basis.

In that context, investing in a modern bike paths across the GWB to facilitate NO-emission travel for a dollar per trip (if that) is a heckuva lot more cost effective than subsidizeing LOW-emission vehicles for up $7.50/trip.

I added the GWB bike path point to "Comments".  Please feel free to "Like".
