No sign of a police "crackdown" on cyclists in the Park

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Tue, 08/12/2014 - 1:58pm

I have been participating in an early morning group that meets for laps in Central Park.  There has been a police presence in the Park throughout the season.  This presence has not been a negative by any means.  There has been speculation about a police crackdown on cyclists in the Park.  I was out this morning at 5:45 AM and  rode in a group until about 7:00 AM.  The police presence was as it has been all season long – nothing more, nothing less.  There was no “crackdown” on cyclists.

Bike Fit

Submitted by BrettK on Tue, 08/12/2014 - 10:40am

A friend of mine is having knee issues when riding. He has never had a professional bike fit and so I suggested that he get a professional fit.

After listening to Paul Levine at a club meeting, I recommended that he contact Paul at Signature. My friend also heard of two others 1. RoadWorx and 2. Mike Sherry from BikeridersNYC.

He lives and rides in Long Island and Sag Harbor. Since he works in the city he doesn't mind having the initial fit in the city, he is concerned about ongoing adjustments if necessary.

Has anyone heard of the bike fitters mentioned. Does anyone have any other recommendations for a fit that addresses.

Thanks,

Brett

Celebrating a Life, Reflecting on Our Actions

Submitted by HSchachter on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 9:54pm

On Sunday, August 3, 2014 Irving Schachter, longtime New York Cycle Club member and ride leader, went to Central Park for his long, slow run of the week. Training for the 2014 Marathon he tried to finish three runs each week: long, slow; tempo, and short intervals.

Around 5 pm a 17 year old boy swerved out of the cyclist’s lane at speed, veered into the pedestrian lane and collided with Irv.  A moment was all it took to end a life that was still flush with aces in terms of athletic accomplishment.

Austin Texas Routes?

Submitted by isotopeofme on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 9:19pm

I'm heading to Austin for the weekend, and want to get a good road ride in while I'm there. There are plenty of online resources that have a great number of rides listed in the Austin area, but would love recommendations from any of you who have been there and know of a ride that you really enjoyed.

New Joisy Gran Fondo - I got a hotel room, am looking for a roomie

Submitted by DSabbarese on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 5:31pm

I know a bunch of NYCCers are planning to do the Joisy Fondo on Sunday, September 7th. The logisitics, I have recently learned, are not easily navigated by a car-phobic Manhattanite, such as myself. First, I learned I'd better get a hotel for the night before, as it is strongly advised you do not pick up your Fondo package on the morning of the event.

So, I'm willing to share the room I've reserved. It would be even better if you plan to drive to M'town on Saturday afternoon. Then we can drive out together! I do plan on cycling the route, however, by myself.

I am well-behaved and toilet trained and have been told that I can be rather amusing.

Police crackdown in Central Park

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 4:53pm

I have heard talk of a police crackdown on bicycles in Central Park - that our permission to carefully ride through red lights in the early morning hours prior to 8:00 AM has been revoked.  I have spoken to several people who have since ridden in the park in  the early morning hours and they have seen no evidence of this.  Does anyone have additional information about this?

Thanks,

Christy

2014 Escape New York - 25 Mile Escorted Ride - 2 Co-Leaders Needed

Submitted by JBlackburn on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 4:17pm

One of our new ENY events this year is the 25 mile escorted ride lead by experienced NYCC leaders.  We thought this would be a great way to introduce the club to new cyclists and interest those who may feel more comfortable riding the route with an experienced leader.  The ride was limited to 20 participants and it filled very quickly.

I need two co-leaders.  This will involve at least a one day commitment, but preferably two days.

On scouting day we will scout the space where the drills will be held, go over a few items, then scout the 25 mile route.

Request help finding a bike travel bag to rent/borrow for 3 week UK charity ride

Submitted by henryhbruce on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 10:51am

All,

I'm flying back to the UK for 3 weeks from 20th Aug - 10th Sep to do a Land's End to John O'Groats (1000 miles) charity fund-raiser ride for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research (read more @ http://lejo.gs) and am requesting the club's help finding a bike travel bag to rent or borrow. If any members have a bag that I could rent or borrow, preferably of the soft clam-shell variety (which I think should be good for my $800 Cannondale on a direct BA flight JHK>LHR), I'm happy to put down a deposit for the replacement cost, in case of damage, etc.

I've checked the NYCC Marketplace and while I do see one bag for sale, I'd prefer to rent/borrow if I can find one that's cheaper than buying!
