PIERMONT ROAD BETWEEN PIERMONT & 9W
Anyone know what's being worked on. They look to be deforesting or clearing trees on a major part of the upslope. Sad to see more and more of the area being cleared for construction if that's what's going on. I noticed it for the first time on my ride last evening.
NYC to Lancaster
I'm planning a ride to Lancaster (city) this summer. I'd like to do it in three days of 60-80 miles each from NYC (likely shorter the third day). From Lancaster I'll bike to the SEPTA stop in Thornton when it's time to come home. If you have route suggestions from first-hand experience, I'd love to hear from you.
Walkill Valley Rail Trail question
Anyone know whether the Walkill Valley Rail Trail is rideable on a road bike with 23mm tires?
Ticketing on River Road & Upper Dyckman
This morning, there was a cop at the bend of Upper Dyckman (the road up from the top of the Great Wall) ticketing cyclists climbing the hill. River Road onwards towards Alpine was still closed, so going up Upper Dyckman was the only option (other than turning around). Tickets were for $85. Incidentally, the cop mentioned that he ticketed two cyclists who had gone past the gate on River Road -- $200 a pop.
Editorial note: I understand why the police may not want cyclists flying down Upper Dyckman, but it's beyond me why biking up the hill at 8 mph or whatever is a threat to public safety.
Weekend Bike Touring / Camping?
Does anyone do any bike touring / bike camping? I've been building up a commuter and light touring bike (based around an All-City Space Horse frame + a mix of donor parts) and thought it could be fun to get some overnights in.
I know 718 Cyclery out of Brooklyn does some rides - and I thought I might tag along on some of them in the future - but curious if anyone else here does anything of the sort?
Sad news regarding a cyclist hit by a truck on First Ave and 9th Street.
The cyclist was removed from life support and died. Images of the truck show no side guards to prevent cyclists from becoming trapped under the truck. This was an experienced cyclist traveling in bike lane and riding with the right of way. There better be charges brought. (She)was riding northbound in the First Ave. bike lane on Wed., April 5, around 7:20 a.m.
the construction at the NJ side of GWB
I asked one of the workers today what was going on. They are building a temporary bridge/overpass to the GWB, then going to replace the current overpass, and then take down the temporary overpass. It's going to be a while ....
The 21st Annual First Aid for Cyclists Seminar
The 21st Annual First Aid for Cyclists Seminar will be offered on Thursday, April 27, at 6;15 PM in the Conference Center at Woodhull Medical Center. This seminar will be open to any NYCC member. We will particularly welcome SIG and STS participants. As is customary, there will be a $20 suggested donation (100% of the proceeds support the Kids Ride Club) and dinner will be provided. Attendees must pre register (so Dr. Fishkin knows how much pizza and chairs to order) and may do so by calling Ruth or Denise at (718) 963-8569.
