Streetsblog Opinion on bikes on LIRR & Metro North
"Now is the time that the suburban railroads should revise their frankly anti-bike policies."
I would ask the NYCC leadership to reconsider their CV19 ride policies and guidelines
Hi All -
As I've posted elsewhere, I think that it is a significant mistake for the NYCC to be having sponsored rides at this point (both weekly rides and ENY), and I would ask the NYCC leadership to reconsider their decision to allow rides.
Another new ride added to the Ride Library
Á Propos of safely getting in your training, we've added a new route to the Ride Library: The Hills of Northern Manhattan: https://nycc.org/cue-sheets/nyc/120060
It has a number of virtues:
Hillclimbs in Manhattan outside of Central Park
Another Hudson River Greenway Rant
I love the Hudson River Greenway.
But like a parent whose child who does not live up to expectations, I am beholden to chide it.
Just back from an out and back to the GW Bridge. 9 miles of riding the Greenway and I observed 3 bone head moves by users who surely would score higher on general aptitude testing. Two displayed the same mistake: they did not look behind them when they turned off the trail. Why is it that people who would never think of doing such a thing while driving a car never consider doing the same on a greenway?
Why Switch the Bike Lane Mid-Block?
Hi, I hope everyone is well and healthy. Has anyone had any terrible experiences with bike lanes that switch sides mid-block? I know there was one of these mid-block changes on West 30th Street and between 8th and 7th Avenues. I found it very confusing and not sure what the City was thinking, anyone else?
If you'd like to email me your thoughts, please do at [email protected]
Thanks!
Tomorrow Evening's Club Meeting
Hi All,
After weekly video programs in the first month of the pandemic and then an extended absence for illness, your VP of Programs (me) is back! Sorry for the gap in programming.
Caution on River Road Past Ross Dock Circle Today
This may be for weekend traffic control, but a friend reports today on River Road there are white & orange plastic barriers (which weren’t there Friday). The first one is just beyong the traffic circle with the ramp down to Ross Dock, and the barriers block the width of the road with a slender, nearly imperceptible chain placed a foot off the ground so that it blends in with the asphalt. So be attentive there not to run into it. There is room to get around it on a bike so this barrier is apparently for cars not cyclists.
Escape New York 2020 Volunteers Needed
The pandemic mandates that we re-design Escape New York 2020 ride to be to be healthy, safe and socially distant. Accordingly, our volunteer roles will be different from years past. In addition to helping on ride day we need your help with some immediate VIRTUAL volunteer opportunities over the summer to help us prepare. If you help prior to the ride you can ride for free on September 26.
Saturday's City Island ride is postponed to Sunday
The weather forecast for Saturday is grim so we're postponing. We're also changing it from a B15 to a C14.
Cuomo bridge bike paths lowers speed limit from 15 to 5 mph near overlooks
Not such a good idea IMHO. Cyclists apparently must slow and speed up +/- 33% several times. There have been many more children (riding tricycles, etc.) than on other area bridges. Instead they could have had special early daytime hours for youngsters.
