Avid Cyclist moving to NYC

Submitted by vince-ct on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 7:23am

Hi Folks-

I'm hoping to get some feedback from those in the know... I'm a serious recreational cyclist, I ride 4-5 times per week in the "good" weather months, and log maybe 4-5k miles per year. Obviously, cycling is a big part of my life.

But I also love, love, love NYC and I am serioulsy considering moving there. My question is this: as a serious cyclist, will I be happy riding in/from the city? Are there enough 40-60 mile routes to keep one going? Are the roads manageable, for those not quite ready to take on a couple of tons of metal? You get the idea...

I'd love to hear feedback from folks who are in a similar position, and how you like living and riding in NYC...

Thanks in advance!

Help vetting a couple of mid-Hudson routes

Submitted by MHiller on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 10:17pm

I'm planning a two-day, one-night bike tour for next week in the mid- to slightly-upper Hudson valley. (Garrison->Hudson on day 1, Hudson->Beacon on day 2, deliberately switching back and forth to see both sides of the river and to hit the bike paths on all applicable Hudson crossings.) Anyone have any pointers on how to tweak or alter these proposed routes?

Submitted by SYoung on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 11:33pm

Isn't there usually a ride (laps/pacelining)  in CP on Tuesday nights? If not going out this week,, anyone interested in meeting up for an unofficial ride - 7:00PM Boathouse Tuesday night - for laps and for some practice (still trying to get this skill up to speed) paceling at B17/18 pace-

Maynard-Switzer Ride Cue Sheet

Submitted by JIgnall on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 5:18pm

Hi,

I'm looking for a copy of a cue sheet for the Maynard-Switzer ride that is typically done on the A-19 SIG.

I can't locate it in the ride library.

Would appreciate if someone can send me a copy or direct me to where it is in the ride library?

Kids cycling in Manhattan

Submitted by Cyclingcoach on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 3:49pm

I have a client with 3 kids who are loving their bikes on the Island (Long, that is) for the summer and are hoping to continue when they come back to the city. They are 10, 7 & 5. Does anyone have words of wisdom about kids and cycling in Manhattan. They are UES located and the Park is convenient for them.

Please email me off-board @ [email protected].

Hi,

Is anyone interested in scouting the route for the Gran Fondo NJ in Morristown.

The route is: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/509536

Seems like a good route to me.  I can drive 2 or 3 other people out there.
