Saturday C-STS series

Submitted by [email protected] on Wed, 03/16/2022 - 4:08pm

Jacqueline Gikow and I are leading a series of 8 rides, starting Saturday March 26, 2022 with a short ride to Cresskill and back. That ride will be posted on the ride listing page within the next few hours. We will continue to post rides about 10 days before the ride date.

So you can make tentative plans, our planned schedule is:

3-26: Warmup to Cresskill, total distance 30 miles

4-2: State line lookout, enternig from the South and leaving to the north, back through the neighborhoods. Distance 35 miles

4-9: Staten Island circumference, lunch at Conference House Park; distance 47 miles, no real hills.

T-Mobile Service

Is anyone using T-Mobile? I use my phone for Ride with GPS. I am thinking of switching providers. T-Mobile offers a reasonable plan for people 55 and over, and I could upgrade my phone at the same time.

No Rest Rooms at the Police Station atop Alpine Hill

Submitted by RWechsler on Sat, 03/12/2022 - 6:59pm

FYI:

A Friday NYCC ride yesterday stopped atop Alpine Hill to use the port-o-potty.

We were told, by the police,  that it was not for public use.

Since we were coming up from 9W, and not River Road, the bathrooms at the bottom of the hill were not convenient.

Seems crazy that this is the situation, but it is.

Don't know of any indoor alternatives between Fort Lee and The Market. Any ideas? (Trees, yes, I know.)

Woodlawn Playground bathrooms closed

Submitted by HBorgeson on Sat, 03/12/2022 - 5:08pm

The Woodlawn Playground on Van Cortlandt Park East is having some work done. Bathrooms are off limits until Fall 2022 according to the sign. Not that it matters to cyclists, but the playground is still open if you go around to the back entrance. And, crocuses are in bloom -- or at least they were bravely peeking through yesterday before today's chilly precip!

B SIG Ride for Sunday -- CANCELLED

Submitted by FLeffel on Sat, 03/12/2022 - 9:04am

We were hoping for the forecasts to improve, but they haven't. With the low temps, wind and potential for ice tomorrow,  we're cancelling the B SIG ride for Sunday.

Sleep in and get that lost hour back!

Cycle Clubs similar to NYCC around Long Beach, CA

Submitted by OAR on Fri, 03/11/2022 - 1:04pm

Folks,

I have a friend way out west who is looking for an NYCC analogue around Long Beach, CA-- She has some anxiety about being woman riding solo lately. In her own words:

My anxiety about riding has increased a lot lately and I haven’t been feeling safe riding alone which is impacting my mileage quite a bit and my overall enjoyment on the bike. The bike paths around me are full of homeless encampments and can get sketchy in a lot of places. Trying to find someone to ride with has been challenging. I’ve tried next door and meet up. Looked for shop rides, etc. but can’t find a nice social group. Everything seems pretty competitive.

B SIG Ride For Sat, March 12, is CANCELLED

We’ll, the weather gods are not cooperating with the BSIG for Saturday.   The Saturday ride is cancelled.

We're continuing to monitor the forecasts for Sunday to see  if we can get the ride in then.  Watch for further announcements.

Why you should ALWAYS WEAR your helmet.

Submitted by RRosenthal on Thu, 03/10/2022 - 9:48am

My nearest CVS store is around a :40 (that's forty seconds) walk from my building if I walk slowly. I took my bike into the store on my way back from a ride Monday and parked it alongside the shopping carts. And put my helmet over a brifter lever. End of story.

Well, no, not end of story. End of helmet. It wasn't until two days later when, looking for my helmet, that I realized it must have been snatched in the store. I hadn't missed it walking those forty seconds home. Conclusion: always wear your helmet.
