LIE service road - reasonable early-morning route choice?

Submitted by MHiller on Mon, 07/29/2019 - 7:45am

I've used the LIE service road to go from Alley Pond Park eastward into Suffolk County before. Is it also a reasonable choice from, say, Utopia Parkway east to Alley Pond? Or even from Flushing Main Street eastward? This'd be quite early (around 7-7:30 AM on a Saturday). Thanks!

Thanks to Jennifer, John and the ride leaders.

Lovely outing to Rye.  Great food.  Smoothly handled.  Perfect summer day.

Getting to Albany with a bike via public transportation

Submitted by Myles Lewis on Sun, 07/28/2019 - 7:27am

Does anyone have any suggestions / experience with taking their bike to Albany by public transportation without having to box a bike? The options I have seen (Amtrak, various bus companies) require one to box their bikes. Maybe the bus companies despite requiring the boxing of bikes on their sites do not enforce this but was wondering if anyone has first hand experience. Unfortunately Bolt Bus doesn’t go there as they allow people to simply throw their bikes in the bus’ belly. I know taking Metro North to Poughkeepsie or Wassaic is an option but those stations are about 72 miles from Albany.

Haven Ave. in Washington Heights

Submitted by HBorgeson on Fri, 07/26/2019 - 10:02pm

I hadn't been across the GW since the spring and was surprised to have my return ride down Haven Ave. cut short by a block by a newly pedestrianized area south of 169th. If you're just turning right on Fort Washington, it's not a big deal, but I go across on 168th so had to make a left turn from Fort Washington at this high-traffic intersection. Next time I'll turn off Haven onto 170th, though in the past the bike lane on that street over by Edgecombe has been completely blocked by NYPD vehicles.

Was glad to see progress with the stanchions for the ramp at the bridge.

Gravel or mountain bike camp

Submitted by RTellerman on Fri, 07/26/2019 - 5:21am

Can anyone recommend a bike camp to enhance skill set on dirt, sand, corrugation, etc. Leaving for a trip in January that will be approximately 35% off road. Preference for east coast. Thanks in advance.

And everybody else involved in the volunteer incentive program.

The personal note that came with the jersey I just picked up is a really nice touch. Well done, and thank you.

This news is sad.  Lange's has been a great pit stop in Scarsdale for as long as I can remember.
