Power Meter Question for a friend

Submitted by Rmarcus on Wed, 01/19/2011 - 2:14pm

A friend of mine looks like he wants to improve his cycling with the goal to eventually race. He has is currently talking with one coach who urged him to get a Power Meter.

Okay, he didn't give me too much beyond that except a certain bike shop said that he should get either a Power meter hub set-up such as Power Tap or a power meter crank set-up.

My question is:
a) Are there 2 ways to gauge power? In other words a crank or rear wheel set-up?
b) Which brands would be the more reliable choicese?
c) Wired or wireless?
d) Why does one even need a power meter if there are gizmos that calculated your HR, Cadence and effort for much less?

Finally, any good places to purchase one new or used ( other than Ebay)?

Thanks

SIG or STS

So I'm new to this club living in astoria. Moved there from rockland country where I was part of a biking club up there which did weekly rides down 9Wfrom nyack to fort lee and sometimes up 9W to bear mountain and perkins drive. Started biking on my first road bike last June and through the summer and early fall put about 1200 miles on my bike.Til I broke my foot early september and stopped riding for a while. Just getting back on my trainer now. I've done a couple century rides as well as a few other tours so have the knowledge of biking and the strength to go the distance.

I'm wondering which is a better ride to join and get into before the summer to build back up some strength. What are the main differences of the rides?

Kurt Kinetic Fluid Trainer for sale; pick up in Downtown Brooklyn

Hi All,
I just moved and there is no room for this minimally used Kurt Kinetic Fluid Trainer. New comparable ones sell for $300-$400 and this one is a couple of years old and hardly ever used. Let me know if you are interested and make me an offer! Thanks!

Problems using web site

Submitted by PMatusewitch on Tue, 01/18/2011 - 11:25pm

I am having recurring problems using the web site. The site does not remember my login from one time to the next. I have to use the reset password function everytime I visit the site. None of the links on the Contact Us page work, so I cannot contact the webmaster for assistance nor view the login help page. Any suggestions on how to resolve these problems?

Thanks.

eWeekly - not so timely info about membership

Submitted by spaniardindworks on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 4:46pm

Gentle Readers,

Far be it from me to tarnish the decorum of this message board and post what some might perceive as a complaint, but does anyone have more timely info about membership renewals than what is posted in the current eWeekly missive?

According to this week's eWeekly, dated today, 1/17/2011:

The Membership functionality of our website is presently undergoing repair during which time you will not be able to renew your NYCC membership.

To our 600 members whose membership will expire by January 15, please note that we are resetting your "Renew Membership" date to January 20.

We expect to go live with a fully repaired "Renew Membership" process on January 15 at which time you will be notified to renew your membership.

need advice -- ever fought a red light ticket in court and won?

Submitted by adamaston on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 6:56pm

hi folks,

got tagged with a red light violation on 5th Ave in Park Slope today. was very polite, suffered through a nonsensical lecture about being a danger to pedestrians and cars (!), while watching a limo do a u-turn...

in any case, i'm wondering is it worth fighting? my one thread of hope: the sun was low, right in line with the traffic light, making it hard to see. i took a couple of photos of this effect, which i could show to a judge and argue i couldn't see the light and there was no cross traffic....

if i fight and loose is there extra penalty?

gracias, adam
