Awesome charity ride - Boston to Cape Cod - June 4

Submitted by ngray30 on Sun, 05/08/2011 - 8:14pm

All,

Thought I'd put the word out there about the Best Buddies Challenge in case anyone is interested.  Audi sponsors this very well supported ride each year to raise money and awareness for Best Buddies, a highly regarded international organization that provides one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

There are a few ride options.  I did the century last year, and will again this year.  If you'd like more info on the ride check it out here:  www.hpchallenge2011.org

East Coast Tour

I am doing a 3 week bike trip from New York to Savannah (unsupported) in June. We were originally planning to do a mix of camping and motels but looking at the equipment involved are starting to reconsider. Does anyone have insight on bike camping? Are you able to find campsites along the way without too much trouble? Are there any concerns about the safety of one's bike at the camp site? How strong/heavy a lock is really necessary in these circumstances?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Did the Gran Fondo NY today---very challenging but fun!

There were 4 steep climbs embedded in the ride,  competitively  timed by computer chips on each bike.  (included Little Tor, Bear Mtn/Perkins 5miles  & 2 others in the Stony Point/ Tomkins Cove area)  There were also plenty of additional hills including River Road.  It took me 8 1/2 hours and it was my most difficult cycling day in a number of years.  It looked like there were 2500+ participants.  It was well organized and the police in many Rockland towns and villages closed a number of roads and were very helpful with directing cycling & auto trafffic.  Yellow well-equipped Mavic cars provided technical services for bike mechanicals along the route and at rest stops.

Bill Clinton on bike path?

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sun, 05/08/2011 - 1:33pm

True, but don't get too excited. He wasn't on a bike. I crossed him walking his dog amid his entourage while I was cycling south, solo, on the North Westchester Trailways, south of 118 and north of the bridge over the New Croton Reservoir.

Just before crossing 118 I spied a large, black SUV off to the left with driver and people milling around. It all made sense, but there is no mistaking him for another. It was Bill.

Big Congrats to all B SIG Graduates!

Congratulations to all of this year's B SIG Graduates!

The B SIG is always challenging, but this year it was more challenging than usual.  We had to work around NYPD policy in forming the groups, which was a little bumpy for some.  We had to work around some bad weather, which was a little bumpy for all.  Nevertheless, those of you who stayed with and completed the B SIG still managed to have a very positive and fun learning experience this year.  At least that's what people were telling me at the end of yesterday's graduation ride in Cold Spring.

Pedestrian caused me to crash on the Brooklyn Bridge

Submitted by seth_prince_the_VI on Sun, 05/08/2011 - 10:16am

not sure where to take this.

yesterday (saturday may 7th) i was bicycling over the Brooklyn Bridge. there was some sort of charity-walk-event going on and the event-walkers were swarming into the bicycle lane.

i was caused to crash by one of these walkers who was in the bicycle lane, by the strap of her bag catching on to my handlebars

i tried to find an event organizer, or marshall but couldn't find anybody who would admit to being in charge.
