advice for selling bicycles

Submitted by SChang on Fri, 05/13/2011 - 11:09am

I have a 55cm Columbus SLX bike equipped with a mix of Campy Super Record (1980s) era and Dura-Ace.  Has anyone had experience with trying to sell a somewhat-vintage bicycle, and where would you suggest?.....eBay, local shops, other?

Should it be broken down and sold off in bits, or as a whole?

Any thoughts about maximizing profits would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Street Sweet - the Opposite of Road Rage

Submitted by FHarris on Fri, 05/13/2011 - 9:03am

As Team Pink of the B16 SIG started the final leg of the graduation ride to Cold Spring, we were treated to some surprisingly lovely behavior by an unidentified motorist.  As we began what where then the painfully rolling hilss of 9D, a gentleman (he earned that sobriquet) in a pickup truck took a position about 50 feet behind our sweep, put on his flashers and escorted us all the way to Cold Spring.  At first, I assumed he was just looking for a turn, but he just stayed in position.  While many cars did pass us, they all had been slowed down first and dangerously large vehicles were forced to wait for appropriately straight or wide sections of roadway to get past.

Marshals needed for Tour de Cure 6/5/11

I volunteered to marshal the Tour de Cure of the American Diabetes Association and the chairman of the marshals, Eric Rosenblum, asked me to solicit NYCC folks to get more marshals. The following is a message from Eric:

Have a great day of cycling while riding for a cause.

Who has done Ft. George Hill from Nagle to St. Nickolas?

Submitted by madison on Thu, 05/12/2011 - 8:43pm

The club has it listed at 170'. That's pretty good for Manhattan. What's the traffic like? Ifigure if I get tuckered out after a few repeats it's a quick #1 home.

50% off bikes and riding on the "wrong" side (in London)

Submitted by GYang on Thu, 05/12/2011 - 5:00pm

In London on business for a couple of days, the first time I have been here since really getting back to cycling last year. Found out that you can save almost 50% off a bike and equipment here through paying for a bike using pretax pounds like a health care savings account which I guess amounts to about a 50% savings at London and UK tax rates...nice deal!

But other observations looking at this city from a cyclist's perspective in addition to riding on the wrong side of the road:

-Lots of cyclists around, and drivers told me that the numbers had risen this year as energy prices rose.

-didnt see too many bike lanes if any, but did notice designated bike stops where bike given space to wait at lights.

Fork shimmy - what causes this?

Submitted by DSabbarese on Thu, 05/12/2011 - 2:11pm

I've had a couple of instance of "fork shimmy" this spring - and it ain't no fun, believe me. What happens is my fork and front wheel start vibrating uncontrollably, like a tuning fork. Of course, this condition only happens on high speed descents usually accompanied by riding on crappy, beat up roads (It's happened to me on River Road and on Whippoorwill). Sidebar - I know we've had a rough winter, but OMG, what's up with the roads in the tri-state area this spring? I've seen better roads in Third World countries, for crissakes! But I regress . . .
