Cat nip for Bike Geeks - Brooklyn Museum Filmfest Friday, May 27 @ 7pm

Submitted by DSabbarese on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 11:05am

A non-cycling friend forwarded to me (I get this a lot lately, I wonder how I got the rep as the "weirdo" who cycles obsessively . . . ) this event at the Brooklyn Museum:

"Streetfilms is proud to present a selection of their latest and greatest transportation films. From the roadways of China and Copenhagen, to those of Oakland and Brooklyn . . . . " you get the picture.

I'd usually try to see something of this nature, but I'll be, humm, cycling in the Berks.

New to NYC, anyone have good routes to share?!

Submitted by talibaba on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 10:47am

Hi,

I just moved to NYC and other than looping central park, I have no idea where to ride!

I'm more of a late day rider - so it's hard for me to join those 7am weekend rides.  Does anyone have some solo-friendly routes to share?  I'm getting back from a laaazy winter but have a centure tour around the cornor (Discover Hudson Valley ride) so anything from short 20 milers to epic century routes would all be helpful.

Also there are any C riders going out in the afternoon, I'd love to join.

I'll make it to a group ride to meet you all eventually!  Until then, any suggestions on where to go would be great.

Talia

B16 laps in Central Park - 5:45am Thursday - canceled

I don't think there's any chance that these soggy roads will be dry by 5:45am.  I hope to see you next week.

Locking skewers or what?

Submitted by Vinnie the saint on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 6:08pm

Greetings;

For the last 20 years or so I've been commuting on a '68 Raleigh Sports named "Rusty". Not too many people want to touch, let alone steal Rusty, so I don't worry much.

Moving uptown and will have a longer trip, so I thought I'd press my lovely old road bike, which has QR hubs, into service as a commuter. Have looked at locking skewers, and these Pitlock things, but I don't know much.

Would appreciate any well informed opinions on the subject.

Regards,

My son and I registered for the Bloomin' Metric, but he is not able to make it after all. Accordingly, I have a place if anyone is interested.

Please email me at [email protected].

Thanks.

Bikes for Kids (mine): Seeking old "10-Speed" in the 54-57cm neighborhood.

Submitted by PStorey on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 10:34am

My daughter keeps "borrowing" my fixie, so I'm exploring building one up for her.

Does anyone have an old 70s or 80s era "10-speed" that they'd like to get rid of for at most a small consideration?  She's 5'8" and leggy, so I'm thinking something around 54 to 57 cm would be about right. Paint quality and other aesthetics are immaterial, but it does need to have horizontal rear dropouts.

With thanks,

Peter Storey

'Consensus' Reached to Reduce Central Park Bike Ticketing

'Consensus' Reached to Reduce Central Park Bike Ticketing  (By Alex Goldmark, Transportation Nation, May 10, 2011)

While police continue to step up enforcement of cyclists who violate New York City traffic laws around the five boroughs, Central Park cyclists may see some relief. Two city council members, along with cycling advocates, report that a consensus was reached after a meeting with police, multiple community groups and local elected officials.
