Bike Lanes and Fast Speeds

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 1:06pm

Here's something for academic pondering or lawyerly analysis:

In clear traffic, I can ride up Third Avenue (Manhattan) at 20mph with no problem. It has no bike lane, and I have the same 30mph speed limit as motor vehicles. Similarly, if I ride up Lafayette/Fourth Avenue downtown, I can maintain high rates of speed without hazard from sudden obstructions (doors, pedestrians, etc.) as long as I hug the roadside edge of the non-separated bike lane.

But if I'm on one of the segments of Second Avenue with a protected bike lane, there's no way I can ride faster than 15mph. It's simply not designed for protecting cyclists riding at fast speeds, and the illegal obstructions are as frequent and disruptive as Casey Neistat's video describes.

Thanks to True and Angelica-- great ride!

Do you have the cue sheet?  Specifically, I' m trying to find where we made the left turn on the steep hill?

58cm "beater"/commuter bicycle WANTED

Submitted by MBruckner on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 10:35am

Hi All,

Once again, I seem to have rode my commuter bike into the ground and so I'm in the market for a new one. Have you got a beater that you're looking to get rid of. I'm 6'2" but have legs that are short relative to my torso. I generally ride a 58 cm frame and something with a long top tube would be great.

I'd like something that I can lock on the street and walk away from without worrying about. Sturdy beats fast and cheap beats expensive, but a lightweight frame is always welcome. Let me know what you've got?

Thanks,

Matt

Newcomers Ride....Thank you!!!!

Submitted by AOcasio on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 8:05pm

What a great, great day!!!!

Utmost thanks to Bill Laffey and all others involved for coordinating a great ride today!  Even better was the weather holding out.

Having just graduating C-Sig, it was a great experience 'officially' being a ride leader for the first time with True and Liz. And I am looking even more forward to leading again.  We had a great group of strong, cohesive riders and I so enjoyed riding with all of them! (You know who you are! ;) )

Can't wait to see you all out on the road again!

Great Newcomers Ride

Submitted by CWaaser on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 6:41pm

Thanks to everyone who put together today's Newcomers Ride and made the right call about the weather.  No rain, good routes, great company, nice lunch.  Looks to me like a lot of our new members are already strong, experienced riders who will fit right in and bring even more energy to the club.  Welcome to them all!
