Micro-burst downdraft and/or tornado crossed S Co Trailways

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 8:55pm

Evidence of severe wind, very recently, on the South County Trailways at the southern end of where it crosses through Tibbetts Brook Park. The downed leaves were not wilted today.

Branches, limbs and trees look like King Kong had a bad day. The path is rideable.

Meanwhile, just a bit north, the Dunwoodie section is held from further work as the stream which crosses it is open, in need of a culvert. The section north of Mile Square Road has been graded. Drainage in both sections had been a major factor riding it in its prior feral state. A lot of effort in surface water control had to have been made to achieve the current graded surface.

Cop Allegedly Threatened To Ticket Cyclist For Wearing A Skirt

Submitted by Mojo on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 2:41pm

"The NYPD has been justifiably criticized for their massive cycling crackdown this year—there's been a record-breaking number of summonses given out to cyclists as part of "Operation Safe Cycle", including tickets for such non-violations as riding a bike with a tote bag on the handlebars and not wearing a helmet.

But a cop threatening to ticket a woman for riding while wearing a skirt? Even for the NYPD, that's just too absurd to be real...except according to one woman, it wasn't.

Jasmijn Rijcken, the general manager of the VANMOOF bicycle company in Amsterdam, told Streetsblog that an officer approached her on April 30 in SoHo, and berated her for wearing a skirt while cycling.

Today's Port Jervis ride is cancelled

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 4:40am

Too much of a probability of rain on the way to the start at GCT and too much on the radar at this time, 5:40 am, for such an all day out and back ride.

Sorry, but it looked more favorable yesterday. Not so now.

Update on Cyclist Arrest Case from April

Submitted by Christina Thede on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 12:02am

Hello, NYCC.  First of all, thank you so much for your support.  Without this message board, I never would have found my lawyer and may never have taken action against the NYPD who arrested me back in April.  For the full story of what happened to me, in case you missed it, check out this gothamist article.

As much as it breaks my heart, I must sell my road bike. I have just had my first child; and my little angel has left me short on money and zero time to ride.

barbecue and chocolate chip cookie ride

Submitted by crosscountrymule on Fri, 06/10/2011 - 9:02pm

stay tuned for a game on/off call, given saturday's iffy weather forecast.  i don't like riding in the rain.  and having bbq in the rain is no fun either.

if the game is on, don't forget to bring your bike lock.  madison square park will be crowded and i want to triple lock our bikes together.

After Sig Series - Chaste Skirt Ride - CANCELLED

Submitted by Lucia on Fri, 06/10/2011 - 4:13pm

We regretfully inform you that we will be cancelling the Chaste Skirt ride tomorrow.  It was a tough decision, but with 50-60% chance of showers and thundershowers, and given there are significant sections of hard pack and hilly country roads, we felt it prudent to save this ride for a nicer day.  We hope you understand.  We are just as bummed out as you are... but as a wise rider said, CT will always be there.  Hopefully we can do this ride again some other time.
