Piermont Ride, Monday May 30
We'll meet as planned at 9 AM since the forecast shows the rain tapering off sharply mid-morning.
Should it still be pouring at the start we'll reassess.
Little Tor ride, Monday, May 30th
We still want to ride! However, obviously we will not if it continues with this down-pour. The weather forecast tells us the chance of precipitation decreases significantly into almost nothing in about an hour....
We are still planning to meet at Grants Tomb for 8:30, but if, at 8:30, it is still carrying on like this (thunder, lightning rain, rain and rain) then, we will regrettfully cancel the ride.
Old Putnam Trail/South County Trail
Anyone have any tips about getting here?
Spent a couple of hours (mostly walking with my bike) through Van Cortlandt Park trying to find the "bike path" that leads to the South County Trail...really gravelly, lots of railroad tie type retainers in the trail, and not fun on a road bike, even with 28c tires.
Is there really a trail through the park, or is it better to just take Broadway up and then Caryl Avenue over to the trail?
And, once you're at the trail proper (just out of the north side of the park), is it paved, or more gravelly stuff?
Walk Your Bike At the W. 72nd St. Riverside Park Entrance
I came in at 7:15 this morning (Sunday). The sign at the top is the one that says cyclists must dismount. There was no one in sight, no dogs, nothing. I coasted down slowly. At the bottom, there were two metal gates with red signs oriented for people going up, which said cyclists must yield to pedestrians. I continued to the right towards the restrooms and behind the restroom was a parks enforcement vehicle and one officer standing on the path. He signaled me to stop. He clearly saw me ride all the way down. So I stop and very politely said Hi or what's up or something like that. He asks me, "Do you usually ride or or walk from Riverside Drive?" So I told him, "Honestly, when no one is around like today I rid
Bit of Horror Close to Home
Warning. If you get a summons ... appear.
Had a friend get a summons last summer for "riding on a sidewalk". He failed to appear for his court date.
The other evening he was stopped on his bike by a patrol car. Then they ran his license and took him in on the outstanding warrant.
It was 9PM on a Friday night, he didn't get taken down to Night Court till midnight and they closed at 1AM .
So he had to spend the night and next day in city jail. In the end, the police "declined to prosecute" the original charge -- probably figuring what the guy went through already was overkill.
All for what would have been a $50 fine.

Help, Tar on bike
Anyone know how to get fresh tar of my bike.????
Free 650c tire for your trainer
If you need a 650c tire for your trainer, I have an old Gatorskin for you. It has tread but is too old to be roadworthy IMO.
If no one claims this in one week, it goes in the trash.
(Gatorskins never flat but they are a beach to install.)
I know: the quality of my freebies has declined drastically. But my housekeeping has improved.
Power (watts) - riding solo vs riding in a group
I have a powertap and I am confuzzled - when riding in a group, I am averaging 250-300 watts, yet when I am riding solo, I am averaging 150-200 watts. Everythign else is more or less the same - average speed, distance, amount of climbing, perceived effort exerted. I come home about the same amount of tired. But when I look at the stats, I see a big discrepancy in average watts, and the only variable is solo/group.
Any pointers/tips? (I thought it would be the opposite, if anything, since I am drafting behind people)
