Something terrific about the NYCC membership.
There were five of us on my ride today. (The word must be out about it. Or, more likely, me.)
No two from the same country. Five people. Five countries: The Netherlands, Poland, Rumania, Colombia, and Detroit.
Moreover, a Ph.D. microbiologist at Mt. Sinai (not to be confused with the NYCC member who is a Ph.D. microbiologist at Rockefeller University) and a combined M.D. and Ph.D. student at Columbia working in neuroscience.
I am dazzled by the international component of our membership and the accomplishment of a great many members.
Late B Ride Listing 45 Miles Through NJ's Great Swamp Wildlife Preserve
The Great Swamp Ride consists of a twisted figure 8 loop passing through and around the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. A remnant of a glacial lake in southern Morris and northern Somerset counties, the Great Swamp forms the source of the Passaic River. The Great Swamp is one of the truly unspoiled natural jewels of the region. Just 25 miles west of New York City you’ll be serenaded by frogs and accompanied by turtles as you enjoy the many resident bird species, including the majestic blue heron. Eagles are frequently seen. Meeting at Penn Station at 8:45am for 9:11am train to Summit (Dover Line). If interested, sign up on ride listing or text me at 347-987-1951.

Japan relief rides
Hiya folks,
A few months ago some friends and I organized a hundred-mile bicycle ride through the wilds of Cleveland to raise a few bucks for the victims of the earthquakes and nuclear disaster in Japan.
There are still over a hundred thousand homeless and languishing, so we're doing some more rides here in NJ/NY in case any of you wish to contribute or even ride along.
New East River ferry is bike friendly
The new city-subsidized East River Ferry is free for another week or so. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/13/live-blogging-the-new-east-river-ferry-service/?hp
I rode it with a friend from East 34th Street to Governor's Island this morning. Hopscotches through Brooklyn, change boats at Pier 11 Wall Street, then out to recreational paradise.
The commuter ferry from Brooklyn is bike friendly. Two racks up front at the entry hold 20 bikes. The fare will be $4 plus $1 for bike, free for sweet little folders like my Brompton.
Aack! Tire Gash
The rain felt it necessary to cull a tube from the Earth today (the day before a century, OF COURSE) as I flatted out my front tire 8 blocks from home on the way out this morning.
The offending puncturer is long gone, and the tube is patchable, and I put a new tube in just for expediency's sake. However...
Turns out my tire, a brand new Continental Grand Prix 4, when inflated, has a 6mm / 1/4 inch diagonal gash just off-center. It's not on the centerline but not on the sidewall either. It opens up about 1mm.
Open House for cycling dream home in Mahopac in Putnam County
Check out the newly renovated home on the Putnam Trailway on Sunday, June 19, from 12 to 5 p.m.
You too can become the MD of a premium bicycle manufacturer...
....by sitting next to someone on the bus. Pretty interesting business programm featuring the MD of Brompton Bicycles.

Extreme cycle commuters?
I'm working on a story about extreme commuters and I'm looking for someone who has a particularly crazy cycle commute. It could be just that their ride to work is over an hour and a half, or that they cover a very long distance in a shockingly short amount of time, or perhaps biking is only a part of their commute and they also take a ferry and train, for example. Know anyone?
