Kudos to Mark Levine, Manhattan Borough President, for publishing a pamphlet listing all the public restrooms in Manhattan Parks and Subway Stations.

Copies are available at manhattanbp.nyc.gov.

Colonial Greenway and Leatherstocking Trails

Submitted by mhsimkin on Sat, 07/06/2024 - 5:38am

Hi:

Does any one know if the Colonial Greenway and Leatherstocking trails in Eastchester, New Ro, Mamaroneck, Scarsdale allow bikes?  If bikes are allowed, how much is paved vs. unpaved.  Are the unpaved sections passable on a road bike?

Thanks

Putt putts & NYC Parks

Submitted by Jonathan Merrill on Fri, 07/05/2024 - 4:58pm

NYC Parks Dept Enforcement officers are out today along a few locations on the Hudson River section of Greenway preparing to enforce regulations that limit access to only certain types of ebattery-assisted bikes. Good to have seen Park enforcement officers enforcing the regulations, beefed up by NYPC officers and squad cars.

Park enforcement officer says that the reason there are so few signs along the Greenway advising the public of the regulations/prohibitions is that other Parks Dept regulations restrict the number of signs that can be posted in NYC Parks about regulations (presumably to limit visual pollution). (UGH!) He also says that the period of warnings in now over and confiscation of prohibited bikes has started. Let’s see.

The aka RR Ranger Station is finally opened for business on July 4th !

.

The bathroom (men's) is exactly the same. Smells a little smokey still.

The water fountain with the bottle refill is unusable, the filter hasn't been cleaned out, ever?

BTW, they still don't want you to lean your bikes on the building. Signs are up for cyclists to use the bike racks, which aren't there. The new asphalt is nice though.

Oh, for all the post-pandemic newbies- The "Ranger Station" is the building on top of the last hill on aka River Road. They had a fire inside and the public area was closed for a long time, and they didn't even give it a fresh coat of paint years later.

Road Construction in the Gunks?

Submitted by [email protected] on Wed, 07/03/2024 - 1:05pm

I seem to recall receving a warning recently that one of the main roads used to tour the Gunks (perhaps it was Mohonk Road or Main Street/Rte. 44, both of which run through the Mohonk Preserve) was under construction and impassable.  But I can't find the warning and I'm leading a ride up there this Saturday. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for buddy/ies to ride to largest hindu temple in NJ

Submitted by tristanlabelle on Sat, 06/29/2024 - 10:39pm
I'm looking for 1-3 adventure buddies for a ferry + bike ride from Manhattan to the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Jersey and bike + train ride back after visiting it. This is the largest Hindu temple in the US, making it a cultural curiosity for me (I'm not religious).

I'm flexible with the date (weekends though), but tentatively July 6th. The best partners have road/touring bikes, have done longer rides before, and don't mind a little improvisation if we hit any surprises.

We'll be riding ~50 miles/80km total, some on bike trails but mostly on smaller roads.
