"Next time I lead a ride, don't sign up"

Submitted by Howard on Sat, 05/25/2024 - 11:48am
Thanks so much to ride leader Jacqueline Gikow https://nycc.org/node/81575 for making me feel so welcome on my second ever ride with nycc. Beautiful day, about five miles into Bronx Shore Parks ride https://nycc.org/node/194201 we made a wrong turn, and as we regrouped on the sidewalk, apropos nothing, she came up to me and said "The next time I lead a ride, don't sign up". "Why?" I asked, dumbfounded. "I don't like that kind of bike." I ride a recumbent (high wheelbase, bicycle, not electric). In no way does this bike impede my ability keep up, follow, signal, etc. My first ride was fine. This was a C level ride! Truthfully, I didn't feel much like following the leader after this reception, so I took my chances with Google Maps and headed home.
The following was just posted on Discord under #Berkshires. Here's a link to the PDF. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FdIshpULBSw2JRpOXkVem9KzYnx2LZM7/view?usp=sharing

Update 5/22/24 - *Restaurants etc* Attached is a PDF which lists Berkshires restaurants and other general information about the area. There are also links on the main Berkshires page https://nycc.org/Berkshires2024 giving information about the area.

*Leaders* Don't forget to bring your sign-in sheet, with blank space for late sign-ups, and an insurance incident report on your rides.

knee warmers without silicone grips

Submitted by HBorgeson on Mon, 05/20/2024 - 9:32pm

It's time for a new pair of knee warmers. Can anyone recommend a type that does not use silicone? Silicone grips give me a rash.

Thanks,
Hannah

Berkshires luggage

A comment about luggage from Elizabeth Wu:

"By the way, I came up with a tip about luggage transport in case you would like to bring some extra clothes/stuff but don't want to carry those while riding to the train station. I mailed my stuff directly to the hotel where I'm staying via UPS and contacted the hotel to receive it before arrival. If you worry about things getting lost/delayed, maybe carry a few items that are most valuable with you (e.g., cycling jersey & bib, etc.). When I return, I will call UPS to pick up the box from the hotel so I don't need to carry my dirty clothes while riding to the train station.
I hope it helps :)
Liz"

Why is NYCC storing so many of our credit card numbers?

Submitted by April on Mon, 05/20/2024 - 3:07pm

I was in the process of renewing my membership, was astonished by the long list of of my past credit cards this web site kept on file! (And presented for me to choose from to renew my membershipwink)

Some of those credit cards must have gone back quite a few years! Sure, they were all cancelled due to being "compromised" while stored in other merchant's casually managed unsecure database over the years. So it's of no practical problem for me personally that NYCC kept all of them for so long.

Curious is any other NYCC'ers are doing the Farmer's Daughter Gravel Ride this Sunday?

I'm only game for the 'Granddaughter" this year but would like to say "Hello" if anyone's coming.

Submitted by [email protected] on Wed, 05/15/2024 - 10:26pm

There's been only a little interest in Berkshires gravel rides this year. The following two routes have been used in the past:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35938767 - this is a 49-mile gravel ride that includes our picnic location at the lake in Lakeville, CT, sandwiches available nearby as described in the Weekend announcement https://nycc.org/Berkshires2024

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30000699 - this is a 50-mile loop gravel ride out of Great Barrington. Thanks to Reyna Franco for these routes.
