Restricting Riders: Does It Go Against the Spirit of the Club

Submitted by RCiardullo on Tue, 01/03/2012 - 12:06pm

Why do leaders restrict the number of riders on a group ride that is an out and back ride? This time of year, there are less rides offered, so it can be harder to sign up for a ride that only allows a small number of people.

On an A or B level ride, there will be plenty of qualified riders to deputize as co-leaders should the group grow larger then what the leaders can handle. Why not open it up, and let large groups split into sub groups through natural selection once out on the road?

CYCLING 104

Submitted by AResnick on Tue, 01/03/2012 - 10:14am

"HIPPIE" new year !  This weeks training topic is spinning classes:  Most spin instructors are NOT cyclists and even those that do ride; often ride less than most of us.  In addition most seem to know little about actual training: zones. heart rate, recovery etc.  Hence; best place to sit is in a corner and adjust their class to fit you best.  1-NO "JUMPS" of a few seconds.

Police giving tickets in Prospect Park

Submitted by tfan on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 11:01pm

Biked in Prospect Park today, first time in a month, since I heard about the the bike rules. Didn't notice any bikers stopping at red lights or going any slower etc. Anyone know how strictly the cops are enforcing the rules. Thank you.

Here's a link to the website where you can find the spreadsheet created by Mark Pankin:  http://www.pankin.com/miles.htm

Go into cell N4 and delete N2+ from the formula bar to remove the error that appears.

Happy New Year friends!

The greatest flattery I've ever received as a cyclist.

...So there I (the absolute worst uphiller in the Western Hemisphere except for an arthritic 93 year old widow) was slogging, plodding, lumbering up Harlem hill yesterday, as I characteristically do (characteristic except for my being on my bike in the winter), out of the saddle, heaving from side-to-side, swaying, humping, looking ugly, riding ugly, pushing myself at my absolute in-season limit—all of 10 puny MPH—in a titantic and losing struggle against myself and gravity when I pass a man who--honest-to-god seriously--barked at me "Show off!"

(For those keeping a record of such things: two cars in the park when they shouldn't be. Neither one seen ticketed by the police who were there.)

B18 Palisades Market 9:30am ride is ON

Submitted by FLoome on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 9:25am

The ride is on! It's come to my attention that it will be quite windy out there, 20-30mph winds - so dress appropriately!

Depending on conditions, we can decide as a group whether to turn around at the Alpine police station and return via River Road, avoiding much of the wind, or keep with Plan A and continue to Palisades Market/return via 9W.

Just read Bike Snob, the book

Written proof that both your act, and mine, are intolerable.

A good read. And you won't lie awake at night wondering how it will end.

Yes Oprah, the last book I read was Bike Snob.

Found: entry level Cateye bike computer

Submitted by DLoayza on Sun, 01/01/2012 - 9:19pm

Found: Cateye "Velo 5" bicycle computer, on 177th st (the street before the street before you get on the GWB), on Sunday 1/1. If you want it back, shoot me a message. Otherwise I'll put it on my commuter and see if I can test it's maximum speed rating of 185mph.
