Kenya Classic 2012 - 217 miles through the south of Kenya - Sign up today!

Submitted by AMREFUSA on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 12:44pm

AMREF, the not-for-profit organization, hosts a fundraising bike tour, The Kenya Classic, for dedicated cyclists through the south of Kenya. The inaugural tour last year was so popular that we have added more trips. Our US office has 5 spots that we can offer US cyclists. The tour is organized by our affiliate in the Netherlands.

First: some background on AMREF. Over 50 years ago, three visionary doctors, including the renowned American surgeon Dr. Thomas D. Rees, had the idea to bring urgently needed clinical and surgical care to the most remote regions in East Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, they called themselves The Flying Doctors of East Africa – now known as AMREF, the African Medical and Research Foundation.

Cars in/out of Central Park: Time to put your body where your mouth is.

I've written there are appallinglly few active bike advocates in our club, that by and large we just want to ride our bikes and are all too happy to parasitically leave to others the work to improve our situation as cyclists and piggyback on their successful efforts. Someone wrote here I was wrong, that our club has many active bike advocates. Oh yeah? Let's do a count Friday in Central Park and see....

Below is a note from TA to its members (and if you're an advocate of cycling, why aren't you a member?):

Directions/cue sheet from Jersey City to GWB?

Submitted by BRoss on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 9:28am

I'm selling my car (yay!) to a dealer in Jersey City tonight and hoping to immediately embrace the car-free lifestyle by riding my bike home from there.

Anybody have a good cue sheet or concise directions for cycling from Jersey City back to the George Washington Bridge? I'll be on Communipaw Avenue/County Road 612 (in between Water Street/Route 440 and JFK Blvd W) if that helps.

Thanks.

If South walkway is closed, how do I get to North walkway on Manhattan side? is North walkway open?

Bike Fitting - need suggestions

Submitted by YK on Wed, 05/16/2012 - 11:29pm

I'm looking for a place that does great bike fittings.  I've gotten fittings at the place I purchased my bike, but I never really was comfortable with the fit.  The last one I got, was particularly uncomfortable, so I'm looking to try some other place.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I've read Signature Bikes and Performance Labs, give good fittings.  If anyone has used either would love to hear about their experience.
