WANTED: Van driver for West Point Weekend

Submitted by Cyclegalnycc on Tue, 03/05/2013 - 3:22pm

Yes, it's a tad early to think about July 4th weekend, but it will come upon us faster than you think!  If you plan on attending the weekend with someone who doesn't ride, you know someone who would be willing to drive the luggage van up to WP on July 4th (Thursday) and back to the city on the 6th (Saturday), please contact me through email.  You will be paid handsomely in thanks and kudos! (And a possible stipend as well)

New A-SIG Classic rider doored after first ride on 3/3/13

Submitted by Ghostrider on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 10:29pm

Hey everybody, my name is Deric, my A-SIG Classic helmet label is Chico. I am new to the NYCC, and have really enjoyed meeting you folks, and riding with the SIG. After the first ride on Sunday I was headed home via Riverside Drive, and got doored. I went down hard, and have multiple really unpleasant injuries. Got lucky in that all x-rays were negative, but not so lucky in that the carbon of my down tube fractured. My frame is dead. I am most likely not going to be ready to ride this Saturday, but am really hoping to be able to make the ride on the 16th. If anybody has a bike that they would be so gracious to let me use in the event that I am able to ride, I would appreciate it immensely. I am 5'7", and would best fit a 52 or 54, although I could make due with anything close.

B16 6am Central Park laps canceled

Submitted by LWintner on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 9:51pm

I know the FOBOs probably think the weather is balmy, but the slower crowd can't bear the thought of riding with a wind chill of 19 and winds at 14 MPH, so the 16s (Jerry Ross and Linda Wintner) are canceling.

Let's see what Thursday brings.

Nelson Vails at Toga Bike Shop - Saturday March 9 - 6-9pm

Submitted by dianegoodwin on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 8:52pm

Hi Everyone,

Nelson Vails will be in town to shoot his documentary in Central Park and Harlem, etc ... on Saturday March 9 during the day. I believe he might be inviting cyclists to ride (will post if yes and with details).

Most probably know that Toga Bike Shop is his original team, where he started. Toga is hosting a Meet and Greet from 6-9pm on Saturday evening. Details are below. It's FREE. There will be a mixutre of social and racing cyclists. Cyclists of all levels and interests are welcome along with friends (non-cyclists as well) ... anyone who would like to meet and chat.

It should be interesting to bump into those who you can only ID by helmet and/or bike :)

See you there!

Pedal & Paddle Outings this Year?

Submitted by nymultisport on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 4:20pm

Marilyn and I plan to reprise last Summer's all-class Pedal & Paddle outings several times in 2013.

To help us gauge interest in scheduling such outings, please send your comments, questions, and/or interest to Marilyn or Ken, either here, or through our messaging system.

We anticipate the first outing in early-mid June, at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus, NJ. Ferry across the Hudson from the midtown terminal, pedal about a dozen miles, paddle for 2-3 hours, have lunch, then pedal and ferry back to NYC via a different route. We're on the Hackensack River, not on "open" water like last year's L.I Sound outing. Kayak rental--some tandems may be available--should only be about $35/pp (courtesy of Hackensack Riverkeeper) for ~3 hours.

The breathtaking wisdom of Ed Orcutt, A Washington State legislator (and one assumes no relation to Jon Orcutt of the Tri-State Transportation Committee):

[You claim it] is environmentally friendly to ride a bike. But if I am not mistaken, a cyclist has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider.  Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.
