Great article in today's WSJ by Jason Gay about Taylor Phinney

Submitted by DSabbarese on Thu, 03/14/2013 - 1:43pm

Jason Gay, of the Wall St Journal, is fast becoming my favorite sportswriter. He is usually quite hilarious, but in today's article he is unusually serious. (He is also an avid cyclist who writes often on cycling) I regret I cannot link the article, as the WSJ has a pay-per-view firewall. (The WSJ doesn't allow free access to its content? I'm shocked!!!)

Anyway, the article concerns a particualrly brutal stage in an Italian race in which the young Phinney had a rough time of it. You surely don't have to be an elite racer to know what that's about. Just sign up for a Gran Fondo and you'll get the idea. Taylor has been one of my favorite pros for a couple of years now, and after reading this article I admire him even more.

cycling in Central Park

Submitted by SChang on Thu, 03/14/2013 - 11:11am

For the past year, on the occasions that I have been able to ride, I have been avoiding Central Park like the plague, mostly because of the issues that cyclists had with the police.  I had ridden, a couple times, following rules/guidelines as best as possible, stopping for pedestrians, runners, slower cyclists, red lights, etc, but was still uncomfortable with the possibility that I would be ticketed for something that I was not aware was illegal/wrong.

Now that the weather is getting better, and my schedule is lightening up, I'd like to begin the new season by warming up and riding easy laps in the park, but remain concerned about getting a ticket for something unintentional.

My letter to the NY Times sports page re: Tour de Trump

Submitted by RRosenthal on Wed, 03/13/2013 - 6:32am

"Rowdiness Becomes a Business Strategy for the Tour" (March 9) quotes that narcissistic, egomaniacal blow-hard, Donald Trump saying, "We're building a tremendous amphitheater; it'll be the best in golf." This calls to mind that narcissistic, egomaniacal blow-hard pronouncing before the 1989 Tour de Trump bike race, which he surprisingly named for himself, "This race is bigger than anything they got in Europe."

It lasted two years.

Looking to Borrow/Rent a Bike Case April 19-30

Submitted by RWechsler on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 6:39pm

I'm looking to borrow a bike case (to put the bike in for an overseas flight) April 19-30.

Will pay a reasonable rental fee.

I've heard that the club owns some and rents these out...didn't know whom to contact about that.

Thanks.

This would be an UNOFFICIAL NON-SANCTIONED by NYCC Ride.

What does that mean? We are on our own for insurance, liability, injury and Bad Press.

Until the rules in CP change we will be doing this as any pick up ride, no different than anyother "who wants to ride" style.

Most likely 2X a week starting at 7PM, with 3-4 laps.

Each ride will be limited to 6 riders. Sorry folks but the smaller the group the less chance of making waves with the powers to be.

It will be decided if we will have a 2nd group or slower group.
