The eudemonic West Point guard was not entirely clear when it would reopen, just that we should get lost....

Bonk Sensor

Submitted by SkipRalph on Wed, 07/24/2013 - 4:58pm

A new biosensor, applied to the human skin like a temporary tattoo, can alert marathoners, competitive bikers and other “extreme” athletes that they’re about to “bonk,” or “hit the wall,” scientists are reporting.

Spectacular sight...see it while you can!

Submitted by GYang on Wed, 07/24/2013 - 8:58am

Fireflies are out in force in CP in the evening. Its a pretty spectacular sight riding along the loop and seeing dozens on the lawns along the sides of the road, and more than a few flying just above the road.

They seem to come out after 8:30 and are abundant from 9-9:30 pm. West Drive between the top of Harlem Hill and the 104th street cutoff was a particularly good spot last night. Go to see them soon though, I think they are past their peak for the summer.

Be careful of all the pedestrians, runners, citibike tourists etc that are still in the park at those hours and paying little heed to the lane markings.

“I don’t want to use this fucking bike! What the fuck is wrong this bike!” [Cavendish] said, furious at seeing his chance of a second consecutive stage win pass him by. Cavendish started the stage on a limited edition Specialized Venge.

Is it still open now that construction to raise the bridge deck has begun? Usually bike/ped access is the first thing to get the axe.

FWIW, last week I rode to Bear Mt. via this route:

West Saddle Brook Rd was shredded.  I guess they are planning to repave.  It may be that it is finished by this weekend, but on the off chance it is not....It went on for 5-6 miles as I recall.

Boxed Bikes on Amtrak - Penn Station

Submitted by Slugger on Tue, 07/23/2013 - 1:29pm

We're considering taking Amtrak into the city (after riding to Virginia), and wondering about the logistics of retrieving a boxed bike in Penn Station. Has anyone done this? Where do you go? Can you get rid of the box there at the station somewhere (after reassembly, obiviously!)? Any tips or need-to-know?

Animal encounter

Submitted by alan west on Tue, 07/23/2013 - 1:12pm

On Saturday, we were riding up the Delaware River from Port Jervis to Calliccon, Via the Pennsylavania River rd.

After crossing the Roebling bridge, and heading north on river road we came a cross a 3-4 ft snake crossing the road, it was nothing unsual until we realized it was a rattlesnake! We got his attention. he certainly had ours and he coiled up and rattled at us, very pissed from a safe distance. Very exciting to see one in the wild.

We continued north all hyped up about the encounter with the rattler when less than a mile later, we rounded a curve to stumble upon a bear laying half on the road chewing a big log, he was just feet away. U-TURN AND SPRINT!
