Unless you only wear orange, avoid Coppertone Sport

Submitted by Cyclegalnycc on Mon, 09/30/2013 - 3:44pm

I thought my wash was "running"...the whites of my jerseys, mostly on the chest/neck area (where, of course, I sweat the most probably) were coming out orangeish-brown after being washed.  Then I remembered a thread by another club member a few years ago, thinking that the new NYCC jersey colors were running in the wash.  I called her, and it turns out it's the sunscreen.  I just got off the phone with Coppertone and she advised me that under the peel-off rear label, in fine print, it says that it may "stain or damage some fabrics or surfaces."  Well, I asked what kind of marketing it was that puts the word "SPORT" in a #30 font on the front of the bottle, but hides that fact UNDER the label on the back, which I needed my strongest r

Kensico area road closure

Submitted by JFinder on Mon, 09/30/2013 - 2:48pm

I rode in the Kensico Lake area yesterday.

The Dept. of Environmental Protection has blocked off one segment of the Westlake / West Lake / W. Westlake / W W Lake series of roads that used to form the southbound route down the west side of the lake.  You have to leave Westlake, go down Columbus for a bit, and then get back on Westlake.  The road closure is not visible on Google Maps.

Specifically, you'll ride westbound on Westlake through the DEP area, then left on Columbus for a short distance, maybe 0.2 mile, then left to get back on Westlake.

Not a big deal, but you'll have to adjust your cue sheet and/or be careful if you're leading a ride up there.

Manners and Self-Inportant Jerks

Submitted by JOlson on Mon, 09/30/2013 - 8:34am

Today, while circling the park on a C training ride, we were slowly overtaking a couple riding together. I said "on your right", since we were going, however slowly, faster than they, and instead of acknowledging this as the polite caution that it was, the woman and then the guy launched into an obnoxious, self-important tirade -- "Do you know who you are speaking to? He's a Category One (blah, blah, blah)"; which the guy followed with "I have never had someone say that to me going 10 miles an hour" (which, of course, was faster than he was going) --, and then he continued to rant on and show how he could ride without hands, take one foot off the pedal, etc. , etc..

Learning to love Long Island

Thank you Pat Mullen for a wonderful ride on a glorious Saturday from Syosset to Caumsett Park to Northport and return.  One could just about forget that one was still in the suburbs of New York City. A very good time was had by all.

Also, thanks to all (and you know who you are, even if I don't) who worked over the years to make the LIRR a usable cycling resource. Conductors in both directions were friendly, the process was hassle free, and now, it seems, LI is available without having to pound down the LIE Service Road!

Saturday September 28 Nyack ride

Submitted by GRoss on Fri, 09/27/2013 - 4:12am

Some of you have asked why my ride listing disappeared from the upcoming rides list. The reason is I changed the number of allowed riders from 15 to 25 so everyone on the wait list is now included. I think it is off temporarily whilst being approved. It should reappear later today, but if not, just show up at Eleanor at 8:30 tomorrow morning and we'll sign up the old fashioned way. Jerry Ross
