I am new to the Escape NY ride and can't figure out from the NYCC website the departure time for riders. According to the site, registration is:

Wind reduction = quieter ride

Okay, I'm already a dork cause I use a rearview mirror (on my glasses).  It's a personal preference and I love it...can't live without it.  Today I tried something called CatEars.  Extremely dorky looking without a headband or hat, but I have to say it ROCKS!  I did River Rd in very northerly windy conditions and all I heard was birds and crickets.  If you put your index and middle finger extended in front of your ear, on your cheek, you will see how it works.  Every now and then I moved them away and all I heard was whoosh in my ears.  So, if you're all about comfort and enjoyment, give them a try!  (They're cheap, too)

Saving GPX/TCX files

Submitted by HSchiffman on Tue, 09/17/2013 - 8:29am

Having purchased and using a Garmin device [610 Forerunner, not a dedicated cycling unit although it gives me cycling speed and distance, but excellent for running], I can download my routes, most helpful off road for making sense of how one had gotten lost.

Now the trick is to export the routes to files so I can post them for all when I edit our Ride Library. I am adrift in a sea of suffixes. Garmin help says I can convert my files to GPX or TCX. Of course I haven't found software to read these files. As of now, the Ride Library will accept GPS files for download.

Can I just manually change suffix GPX to GPS and expect users to be able to access the file?

Am I reinventing the wheel and is there a better way for me to do this?

This time, I REALLY conquered Walnut Street

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Mon, 09/16/2013 - 8:03pm

(For all the people who might be concerned: This sign was laying on the ground next to the pole when we climbed Walnut on our ENY scouting ride. I did not personally remove it from the pole. And I put it back when I finished taking the picture. There are witnesses to my proper and legal behavior! But I couldn't resist the photo op)

Meet at the Boathouse to clip in and roll out at 7:30pm. We will mix in some Harlem Hill Loops and finish up at Chipotle on 52nd Street between Lex and Third for a beer and burrito. See you there! Rod

Hope to see everyone on Wednesday or Friday.

Kind regards, Jim

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to make sure I get lots of rides in before the weather gets cold.  I'm doing Escape NY, 65 miles and just wanted to see if anyone would be interested in keeping up that sort of a length of a ride until the weather turns in November.  So, I guess I'm seeking riders who might be interested in doing 50+ mile rides through October, starting in Brooklyn and heading out to different places and figuring out interesting rides.  Currently, I'm at a 13-15mph pace on a mountain bike with slicks and looking to upgrade to a road bike by spring.  If this sounds good to anyone.....the idea of 50+ rides on weekends at that pace, please do contact me and we can set something up.

Thanks and Best,

Jon Pauley

Accidents on 9 today, 09.15.13

Submitted by e.larsen on Sun, 09/15/2013 - 4:17pm

Saw the wreckage of two accidents on 9 today.  River Road was virtually closed off at the entrance, at about 930am as a dozen police and medical vehicles swarmed the entrance.  I saw two officers wheel away two bikes.  Don't know if there were others.  Not clear if an automobile was involved.

A few hours later, 1130ish, a male in a bmc kit was laying on the shoulder of 9, northbound just south of the Alpine exit from RR.  Police were on the scene and he wasn't getting up.

What a mess.  I hope all the riders recover soon.  If you have any additional information, please post here.

Ride safely!
