Volunteer Recognition Party! Feb 26th

Submitted by J S on Fri, 01/31/2014 - 11:18am
Hi folks, we're all set for this year's Volunteer Recognition Party.

IchiUmi
6 East 32nd Street (between 5th and Madison)
February 26th
7:00 PM

As per usual, you must email [email protected] with your volunteer work from 2013.  You can also contact me via email if you have any questions.

Please note that Escape New York has a separate volunteer party.  This is for members who assist at major events like the All-Class Ride, who lead rides, help at the monthly meetings, and so forth.

See you there!
JS

I have always been proud of the fact that, in addition to all that NYCC has to offer, members find the time to give back to the community through a variety of programs including transportation activism, clean-up rides, youth programs, ENY etc.  One area where we as a group are perhaps more “takers” than “givers” is, inherently and unfortunately, our occasional use of medical first responders and emergency rooms.  I am proposing an opportunity for club members to give back in this area.

repairing a flat when you have no spare tubes or patches

This was a new one to me.  I'd be curious to know if it really works.  Just hope its not me who finds out.

Is anyone racing a Spring Series?

Submitted by Gramercy on Tue, 01/28/2014 - 9:58pm

I am thinking of doing the CRCA spring series, but there are also races that take place in Newark, and there's a good spring series in Bethel, CT that I wanted to do as they have learning sessions before the Cat 5 races, but it's a decent drive to get there (70 miles). Is anyone interested in going to these races? I have a car and live right near Central Park.

LI Motor Parkway Extension on Union Turnpike?

http://www.streetsblog.org/2014/01/28/eastern-queens-advocates-hope-to-turn-motor-parkway-into-greenway/

The concept presented here would connect the intersection at Alley Pond Park (presumably using the existing dead-end LIMP ramp) to Commonwealth Blvd. No plan to make that road any easier for us, but the connecting stretch of Union Turnpike there is a miserable stretch of road for everyone. This proposal could introduce a vast improvement...

January 28 Update on Westside Greenway path?? (and CP?)

Submitted by DMC on Tue, 01/28/2014 - 11:17am

Hi Nycc friends!

I have a lunch today (with my daughter) that I might ride to (on my road bike) from Grants Tomb to Chelsea. I'm ok in terms of warmth, but not sure the greenway would be safely ridable, especially with possible melt yesterday and the deep freeze last night and today. I don't want to slip on ice.

Any hardy commuters out there who can report on whether it's safe to ride the Greenway today? Also would be curious about Central Park, but main focus for me is the Greenway.

Many thanks in advance and happy new year to all!

This came through in a junk-mail from Chain Reaction Cycle.  Was it funny, or true?

Associate Director of the NYC Tour de Cure Position is Open

Submitted by deloucal08 on Mon, 01/27/2014 - 1:59pm

Hi All,

I’m the current organizer for the NYC Tour de Cure, a charity bike ride to benefit the American Diabetes Association.  I recently accepted another position at the Red Cross and will be leaving the Tour shortly, but I wanted to do my due diligence and spread the word about this opening.  It’s a demanding but fun role and you get to work with great volunteers, many of whom are NYCC members.

Check out the description below.  If you’re interested email me at [email protected].
