My Escape Review
As an out of towner (Miami), I didn't know what to expect with this ride. It was literally perhaps the third ride I've done in the New York area, and, Miami being dead flat, was unsure as to how it would all pan out.
The many other organized rides I have done just about all have a mass start, so I was a little confused when it just seemed people were taking off in little groups. A volunteer told me this was the norm, and seeing as I had to be back at a certain time, off I went.
This being the case, I rode maybe 80% of the ride alone, this being the 65 mile ride.
An Open Letter to the NYCC Membership
Dear NYCC members,
The incident on Thursday afternoon in which a cyclist riding laps in Central Park hit and severely injured a pedestrian has been on the minds of many club members. As some are aware, the cyclist had recently joined NYCC, although it's important to note he was not on a club ride at the time. This follows another tragedy last month in which a long-time NYCC member was struck and killed by a young cyclist while walking in the park. These events should and do give us pause.
Central and Prospect Park during car-free hours -- apparently, it's been improper to ride in auto lanes the last 2 years?
So, when the drives were reconfigured 2 years ago to expand the pedestrian and bike areas, and end the "shift" in their use when we went from car hours to car-free, I was under the impression that the status quo during car-free hours remained unchanged. That runners and peds had the inside lane, and bikes had the outside 2 (with relevant exceptions in the lower loop where the drive is wider, or narrower and horsey, etc.)
This has come up in the Tarlov/Marshall crash coverage, with the Post especially harping on the fact that the crash happened where the crosswalk intersects an auto lane, not the bike lane.
My 2014 Escape NY Experience
This was my 3rd year to volunteer. Just like the last 2 times; I had a blast. Thanks NYCC, volunteers, riders and sponsors!

Old Putnam Trail Question
Carol, Rob, or any of you other knowledgeable riders of Westchester routes...from the map, it's not clear (to me at least) where I pick up the trail. It looks like it's off Broadway by Van Cortlandt Park. Any specifics anyone can help me with? Also, I'm going to Dobbs Ferry and need to exit at Ashford Ave. Are the exits off the trail noted anywhere on maps?
Thanks in advance!
Escape New York! Thank you
Many thanks to all of our club members who came out and helped make The 20th Annual Escape New York a wonderful success! We had great turn-out, perfect weather and lots of happy cyclists! Only through your dedication and hard work is Escape New York possible -- Thank you!!!

Witnessed a pretty righteous red light bust on RSD yesterday, actually

This happened around 10:30 AM. What precinct does the intersection of 145th & RSD fall under? I'd be happy to give kudos to the correct police precinct, or have them passed along for me.
Sunday 9/21 ride to Armonk update
Though it's no longer raining, Weather Underground still calls for a 30% chance of thunderstorms until 11am or so. Let's delay the start until 10am, and hopefully by then the weather will have cleared or we'll have a better clue as to whether a storm is coming or not.
