...and, as only one of you is still listed (notwithstanding the sign-in list)...the ride is canceled. Or cancelled. (The dictionary accepts both spellings.)

What can we do????

Submitted by EJacobs on Sat, 09/20/2014 - 9:29pm

I have been sick after hearing of this latest death. And this one we cannot chalk up to some random yahoo kid. This was one of our own. I'm upset to the point that I've been considering giving up biking. (Those who know me know how extreme this is.)

But what can we do to stop this from happening again? We cannot possibly go back to business as usual, hoping to just lie low until the whole thing blows over.

I have some proposals:

Central Park Agreed Rules Regarding Red Lights?

Submitted by JOlson on Sat, 09/20/2014 - 5:39pm

Do we have any sense from Neile's meeting with the Central Park Precinct Commander whether the long-agreed-upon protocol for red lights still applies?

As I understand the agreement, which I believe was negotiated when Ellen Jaffe was Club President (apologies if I'm wrong), cyclists

  1. must yield to pedestrians at all times;
  2. must stop at red lights in the Park whenever a pedestrian is in the pedestrian crossing lane;
  3. may go through red lights when no one is in the pedestrian crossing lane.

Some people say that this protocol applies all of the time and some say that it applies only until 9:00 am in the morning.

I don't know whether the same rules apply to other City parks.

Report from this afternoon’s meeting with CP Precinct Commander Corey

Submitted by NWeissman on Fri, 09/19/2014 - 8:54pm

People,

Late this afternoon, principals of CRCA and I were summoned to the Central Park Police Precinct Headquarters. This is what I can report and was asked to share.

Expect more enforcement in Central Park for the following:

- Failure to yield right of way to pedestrians

- Going through red lights

- Wearing headphones on both ears

In addition, ALL cyclists are subject to obey ALL rules of the NYS Bicycle Laws, Rules and Regulations, at ALL times.

Our thoughts go out to Ms. Tarlov and her family.

Join Team Lucarelli/Castaldi-NY Velocity for Escape NY A Ride

Submitted by dhfine on Fri, 09/19/2014 - 1:01pm

Team Lucarelli/Castaldi-NY Velocity will be leading an "A" ride for Escape New York. Strong riders looking for a great group ride should come along.

We will meet at around 6:45 AM at Sakura park and congregate just outside the fence to the south of the entrance.  At 7:15, we ride. The pace will be steady and we will try to keep everyone together. It may get a bit more selective on the longer climbs, but we always regroup at the top. We’ll stop for mechanical issues and the like.

Central Park emergency meeting with NYPD

Submitted by GeorgeArcarola on Fri, 09/19/2014 - 12:01pm

Most of us are aware of the tragic Central Park incident that took place yesterday.

Neile Weissman is currently on his way to the Park for an emergency meeting with the commander of the Central Park Precinct.

At the conclusion of that meeting, more info will be posted.

Thanks,

George
