...and through snow in South Dakota.

And, yes, I got her permission to mention her age--which is what is really noteworthy about this ride and why I mention it.

So that's what that was (dead bear)

I saw this ominous scene on the West Drive of the Park yesterday afternoon but kept pedalling. I'm relieved it wasn't a human tragedy, although a bicycle was involved. Weird tale.

NY cycling moment of sorts

Submitted by GYang on Mon, 10/06/2014 - 8:54am

Riding east on 110th street north of CP someone yells at me from a passing car "you A&&..le get in your lane". I rode up to the car at the next light and this is the conversation that ensued:

me: "excuse me, did you say something to me"

passenger (male): "you are an A&&..le you are supposed to be in your lane"

me: "I am in my lane. I am allowed to ride where it is safe for me - away from parked cars in case someone opens a door"

passenger: "Because you will fall if you hit the door?"

me: "yes...and you should give me 3 feet clearance too."

passenger: "not me she is driving"

me: "Mam, would you please give me three feet?

driver: (giggles)

Exploding CO2 dispensers

Submitted by Cyclegalnycc on Sun, 10/05/2014 - 6:47pm

Had an interesting experience after changing a rear flat today.  First CO2 cartridge was leaking out where there is threading on the bottom of the dispenser, under the trigger, where the cartridge cover usually goes (I leave out of saddle bag to save space, just bringing the dispenser head).  After letting the CO2 completely leave, I threaded a second cartridge, began to attach to the valve stem, when it exploded...not the cartridge, but the dispenser.  Glad it missed my eyes!

Looking for Cycling Buddy for Short Mid-week Rides

Submitted by JOlson on Sun, 10/05/2014 - 4:29pm

I have a flexible work schedule and work from home (East 73rd Street) and would like to find someone else who can, from time to time, take a break during the day on short notice for recreational, relativedly short rides (e.g., riding the Greenway to the Bridge or to BPC, around CP a couple or three times, maybe Randalls Island; occasionally longer rides, such as over the bridge to ride River Road, etc.). I am a C+/B- cyclist and ordinarily sign up for either C or B15 or B16 rides.

Not every day.

If interested, please contact Jim Olson.

Thanks!

GateHill Road near Palisades.

Submitted by mgeller1 on Sun, 10/05/2014 - 6:41am

This is the route I always take when coming back from StonyPoint via Motts Farm, Cedar Flats etc. But the section that passes by the Palisades onto GateHill Road has been left in a grated unpaved state for longer than I can remember. Anyone have any idea why its not getting worked on or when it will get paved. It's definteily a buzzkill on an otherwise fun path back from Bear Mountain.  Gran Fondo NY also uses this road, I'm surprised it never came up.

Hello

Does anybody knows how to join the old rail path from Van Cortlandt Park without going into the mud?

Thank you in advance to let me know

RWGPS>useful cue sheet converter

While it's still a PDF, vs. a editable word or text file, it's still a big improvement over the standard RWGPS printout.  IMO.

Thanks to Mike Kocurek and Nick Ursa for the link.
