Proposed By-Law changes...

Submitted by EJaffe on Wed, 10/29/2014 - 5:39pm
I suggest club members take a careful look at the NYCC By-Laws change under Title of Officers and consider its long-term ramifications.

In my view, NYCC is well-served by a large Board and the diversity of voices that comes with that Board.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer - New York - June 6-7, 2015

Submitted by brianbrewer on Wed, 10/29/2014 - 11:25am

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a two-day, 150 mile ride through New York's beautiful landscape benefitting the Cancer Research Institute (www.cancerresearch.org). I'm captain of our team here at the Cancer Research Institute, and I invite you to learn more about the race and register to ride with us.

Here's a video about The Ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t1PCNeZnYo

And here's where you can register or learn about informational events: http://ridetovictory.org/ny

Please share this with your cycling friends. It's a ride, not a race, and anyone over age 18 can do this.

Advocacy Opportunity - please take action

From the League of American Bicyclists:

"Please contact Congress and tell them to respect all commuters: Under current law people who drive to work get almost twice the parking benefit as transit riders get for transit.

Starting this past January, transit benefits slipped from $245 a month to $130, and parking benefits increased from $245 to $250. Meanwhile, the bike benefit stayed at $20 a month -- but under a current bill in the U.S. House of Representatives, the bike benefit would be repealed all together."

I feel Neile is serving us well as President of NYCC

As a non-board member, but a volunteer on the periphery, my dealings with Neile have been positive.

If you can’t beat’em join’em? Salmoning for the big guys…

At about 6:45 this morning I watched an eastbound car on 14th street turn south on 1st Ave and, using the bike lane, drive to 13th street, making a right on 13th.  Not the start of a trend I hope.

Electing a strong leader

Submitted by Slugger on Tue, 10/28/2014 - 8:32am

As a relative newcomer to NYCC, I wondered what role the president truly has. My experience on the board in 2014 has led me to value a leader who wants to tap the huge resources of our membership through collaboration, cooperation, and spreading many tasks over many hands. At our core we are a club of riders, and our programs, events, and advocacy all shape our rides and riding. We need someone who can organize a large board, build consensus, garner participation, and make everyone feel welcome, supported, and heard as we continue to provide opportunities for our members and community.

I think the best person for that job is Brian Van Nieuwenhoven.

We Have The Ability To Broaden Our Activities And Interests

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Mon, 10/27/2014 - 5:27pm

The integral experience of the New York Cycle Club will always be its core activities of organizing rides and promoting cycling. That would not and should not change. But for those of us who might be interested in expressing additional interests through cycling, a strong organization capable of fostering broader interests can provide a rich experience for many of us.

(This is a tie-in with the other thread I started, both written around the same time. The common idea is that a strong organization is better prepared to make things happen.)

More, Better Rides in 2015

Submitted by NWeissman on Mon, 10/27/2014 - 1:17pm

People,

Since the other candidate has spoken on the subject, I believe you're entitled to my thoughts as well.

Our Club is first and foremost a riding club.  Ride leadership occupies six seats on our Board; VP-Rides, A-B-C Coordinators; an Events Coordinator who handles New Comers and All Class; and an ENY Chair to coordinate our signature public event.  In addition, we have the SIG Captains and Leaders, and volunteers who wrangle multi-day rides like Berkshires and West Point.
