Source of annoying rattling sound on road bike
I recently diagnosed a persistent, difficult to solve problem where my bike would make an annoying, metallic rattling sound when riding over rough pavement. After having tried all the recommended remedies (e.g., tighten headset, tighten chain by removing a link, tuning bike to ensure no slapping of chain on front derailleur, putting rubber O-rings under the valve stem bolts, removing my saddle bag), I recently solved the problem when changing my cassette. The retaining ring for the old casette had worked itself loose over the miles, and the cogs were rattling when I rode over rough pavement. This situation caused an incredible loss in power, as well.
Everything you always wanted to know about tire size, pressure, aero, comfort and more...
For the real bike geek (like me), a very recent 6 part series covering the science and real world performance of tires and tire inflation pressure. Follow this link to silca.cc

The greatest transgression on a bike path/shared path
Between running and cycling on shared paths, observing human behavior and casting judgement, my vote towards the greatest transgression in light of danger is turning left without looking back. Just because you can do it any number of times without an incident does not mean it is safe. The impact of a collision with a runner or cyclist turning off or turning around to the left can be catacylsmic. The party on the left is at speed; the party turning off is essentially stationary. I have witnessed the result and it is not pretty.
Tire pressure. Lower is better?
Interest article on tire pressure by Josh Poertner, one of the brightest guys in the bike industry.

Call Hollow Road
Road wasn't passable today. Police set up detours on account of the road plates having been removed for the laying of gas pipe. The detour is Haley Drive which will add some climb to your ride if you are headed toward Harriman.
Poor condition of the North/South/Putman County Trailways
Just back from riding the Trailways on a road bike from south of Carmel to VC Park.
My take away is the surprise that there are still a few sections that are rideable without having to deal with a poor surface. I can't help feel that the surface was paved right over the old railroad ties. The surface waves in a frequency that mirrors railroad tie placement. I'm sure it is fine for walking dogs, but as fare for cycling it is a starvation diet.
Did contractors follow correct guidelines? Were there specific guidelines to prevent what it has come to be?
The irony will be the completed access at Van Cortlandt Park leading to what is now, a roller coaster.
Protected 2nd Ave lane for Midtown! 7pm Mon. July 11
Saw this notice from TA just now. Alas, I am leaving town on the 10th.
If any NYCCers can make it on Monday to show support, that would be great!
Maintenance Tip Of the Day
So I do all my own maintenace and build my own bikes everything mechanical. Can't believe I never thought of this before.
Watching the latest Ask GCN Anything video (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkfGjC1HB9Y and subscibe to the network) Matt Stevens answered a question about which rings and cogs one should leave ones bike in when not riding.
I probably like most have been in the habit of leaving mine in the small front ring and middleish rear cog, ready for a flat start. But Matt pointed out that the proper way to leave your bike is small front smallest rear. This relieves all the tension from both the front and rear derailleur springs and cables.
B and C Leader Training Rides are ON
See you at Le Pain Quotidien.
Central Park Alerts
Every once in a while someone asks how to find out when the park drive will be closed for an event or when the NYRR is having a race in the park. You can always check this link to find out what's comig up in the park. If you use the park a lot, bookmark it.
