Found a Garmin in Central Park today

Submitted by throwaway20160922 on Thu, 09/22/2016 - 10:03am

I found a Garmin on the road in Central Park today, 9/22/2016, and would like to reunite it with its owner.  I don't know if it's the Garmin of a NYCC member, but hey...

The device still has an extensive history saved on it, as well as characteristics of the bike/person with which it was paired.  Prove you are the owner by responding in this thread with details of that history, etc., that no one but the owner of the device would know.

cyclist or terrorist?

Submitted by TonyW on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 7:42pm

My solo ride today went from unfortunate to bizarre shortly after stopping on 9W with a second flat, only to find my saddle bag open and empty. Evidently I'd failed to close it properly after fixing the first flat and all the contents had tumbled out somewhere along the way. Thus lacking resources, I called 9W Bikes (formerly Toga) for road service. While waiting, a police cruiser pulled up behind me with lights flashing, soon followed by a second and eventually a third. They were all sent for me, but not to offer help as I first thought. Someone reported me as a terror threat. Yes, really! The officer who spoke with me was a former cyclist and was very cordial. He said that people are on edge due to the recent bomb incidents and 9/11 anniversary.

Moving Violations Issued to Cyclists in Piermont

Submitted by Steve Vaccaro on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 1:50pm

FYI, it appears that several cyclists have received summons for traffic violations in Piermont recently, and that these summonses were mis-coded as motorist violations, meaning the cyclists were being improperly charged a motorist-only surcharge and receiving penalty points on their driver's licenses.

I sent a letter to the Piermont Village Court to advise them of the background on this issue, text should be self-explanatory:

Why helmets don't prevent concussions and what might - Ted Talks

Submitted by NWeissman on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 7:45am

What is a concussion? Probably not what you think it is. In this talk from the cutting edge of research, bioengineer (and former football player) David Camarillo shows what really happens during a concussion — and why standard sports helmets don't prevent it. Here's what the future of concussion prevention looks like.

Has anbody ever done this? I'm thinking of doing it in the summer. I believe it's about 105 miles with under 6,000' of climbing.

Coming home from my ride I'm passed by an 8 by 6 paceline only to see a rider on the G.W. turning a bend with one hand on his cell phone having a conversation turning wide and not looking ahead and then having an impatient cyclist pass me on the  eggress from the bridge only to stop on the other side and pull out his cell phone to make a call.
