Bike computer recommendation

Submitted by BLevitan on Wed, 03/10/2021 - 1:36pm

I am looking for recommendations for a new bike computer.  My last one, many years ago, was a first-generation Garmin.  I need speed, distance, cadence and heartrate.  What's good out there these days?

Jerry Ross’ C-STS Schedule of Rides for 2021

Submitted by GRoss on Tue, 03/09/2021 - 8:37pm

Marc Simkin and I will be leading the following series of STS-style rides. The rides will be posted on the ride listings page, https://nycc.org/upcoming-rides, approximately two weeks in advance of the ride date. The number of riders is limited to 8 riders, conforming with our NYCC Covid precautions. Masks will have to be pulled up any time we are riding or resting near other people (e.g., on the George Washington or Mario Cuomo bridges, pit and meal stops, helping with an accident or mechanical issue). The pace will be C14, which as everyone should know is the cruising speed on flat terrain with no wind. Of course. that means we will rarely ride at precisely 14 mph because there is no such thing as flat terrain and no wind.

Looking to borrow a bike case in September

Submitted by GoJaqs on Tue, 03/09/2021 - 10:03am

I have a bike trip to Bali in mid-September and need to transport my bike.

I'm leaving around Sept 18th and returning around September 30. I live on the Upper West Side.

If you have a case and would be willing to lend it to me, I would appreciate it (and treat you to dinner - which hopefully will be possible by then).

I can be reached at [email protected], or 917-881-8439.

Looking for an Allez Sprint to try out

Submitted by rbartol000 on Mon, 03/08/2021 - 10:29pm

Hey yall, has anyone spotted an allez sprint in a store around NYC in size 56 or 58? Going to be putting in a little bit of money to have a nice bike for the next couple years of grad school, and the person im purchasing from is unfortunately on the other side of the country. Other option i suppose is going to a place with retul, but hopefully someone here has word on store availability.

The terrible, awful, dreadful, ineluctable aging of our club continues unabated.

Dunkin' Donuts rest rooms: open in Demarest, closed in Cresskill

Submitted by jzisfein on Sun, 03/07/2021 - 7:48pm
Did a scouting ride today with stated purpose of finding open restrooms. (Actual reason was just to get out and ride.)

The Demarest (Hardenburgh) Dunkin was open as were the restrooms. FYI the issue late last year was that the restaurant itself was closed, not just the restrooms.

I don't know whether they would have let us use them without a purchase if we had asked. The employees were serving customers and I don't know if they noticed us. My M.O. is to go in the back door and be unobtrusive.

Good shop for cleaning and relubing a mint 90s era Trek 750

Submitted by MFulton on Thu, 03/04/2021 - 5:47pm

Hi all,

I am looking for a shop in Manhattan (ideally) that can do a straightforward recable, repack, drive train cleaning, and tune up of a '90/'91 all original Trek 750 that I recently bought. The bike has been stored in a garage for 30 years, and looks like it maybe has 2 miles on it. It has Suntour X-Press trigger shifters that work well, but could use some clean up and relubing of the internals.

I could probably do the work myself (obviously not as well as a real mechanic could), but I don't have the time right now, and I also don't have the space nor facilities to handle what will be a somewhat messy job.

Thanks for any advice!

Orthopedic (hip) surgeon in Brooklyn

Submitted by mpersson on Mon, 03/01/2021 - 1:59pm

hi all,

I broke my hip last week in Austin, got some screws in, and now I am looking for an orthopedic surgeon in Brooklyn who knows what to do next. I saw some old posts with recommendations for NYCC-member dr. Claudette Lajam (in Manhattan), who sounds great, but if there's someone closer that would be even better.

Thanks a lot

Michael
