Caumsett/Northport ride

Submitted by easyrider on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:22pm

Great ride, solid B or recovery ride on the incredibly scenic North Shore of Long Island. Easy access via LIRR. Thanks Pat, Jim, Anathea and Emily for the great company on what could have been another one of those grey dreary days we've been having~:P

Free women's small cycling gloves - worn once

Submitted by SParete on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 6:30pm

Okay, I know it's gross to try to pass off worn cycling apparel; I remember the grief that guy got a couple of years ago for trying to sell his used shorts.  But these are just gloves, and before I throw them away, I thought I'd ask if anyone wants them.

Giordana "Strada gel," black, size small (felt fine in the shop, too tight on the ride).  Worn once a couple of weeks ago on a ride to Nyack, did not take them into the restroom, washed them when I got home.  (I even had sparkling-new shifters and bar tape, which lessens the yuck factor here.)  Lightly scuffed on the palms as you might expect, but otherwise a shame to put these in the trash.

Long Island Cycle Club Connections Needed

I'm doing some volunteer work for the American Heart Association's 2012 LI Heart Ride and would like help to identify LI cycle clubs I've missed. I've found 7 cycling clubs/teams, including:

Contador uses "granny gearing" in Giro's hardest climb

Submitted by DLoayza on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 8:32am

I thought this was interesting. He didn't actually use a triple, but race commentators reported that Contador made a bike swap before climbing Monte Zoncolan. The new bike had 36/32 front/rear gears, which results in gearing that is even lower than a typical triple! Monte Zoncolan is one of the most demanding climbs in pro cycling. It hits 22% at some points.

Lowest gear on a typical compact (front/rear): 34/25... gear inches: 35.7

Lowest gear on a less typical, but lower geared compact: 34/28... gear inches: 33.2

Lowest gearing on a typical triple: 30/25.. gear inches: 31.5

Drumroll please....

Contador's lowest gearing for Monte Zoncolan: 36/32... gear inches: 29.6

Hats off to Gerald Seppey and Ron Roth for putting together a terrific series of spring rides - featuring some of the most adventurous, challenging, and beautiful rides I've enjoyed in my four seasons in the club.

More hats off to Terry Farrow and Rich Ramon for sticking it out today, and finishing the 100 mile Poughkeepsie-Westport route, in the rain and cold that descended on Litchfield and Fairfield Counties.

Berkshire baggage schleppers needed

Submitted by RFranco on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 8:35pm

I have received several requests from people who need schleppers to bring up their bags.  I also have received requests for ride shares.

Please reply to this post if you can bring up a bag or two, or even do a ride share.  It would be greatly appreciated.

See you in the Berkshires!

Bob Mionske's "Bicycling & the Law" (2007)

Every cyclist should read this book.  I have an extra copy that I'd like to put into circulation amongst the NYCC.
